Like a miniature sculpture with attitude 😎
Family: Cactaceae • Pot: 5.5 cm • Height: 8 cm
Parodia culpinensis is a compact collector cactus with a tight, almost sculptural form and a character that stands out immediately. Its body stays low and compact, with clear ribs, a woolly crown and spines that give it a wilder, more elegant look than many other small parodias. Even at this size it already looks visually mature, without losing its clean line, and it works beautifully in very bright spots, in cactus collections or in small plantings where a plant with strong personality, strict form and genuine collector appeal is needed.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally near a window with many hours of strong light. If you have a balcony or a protected outdoor space, it can spend the warmer months there too after gradual acclimatisation. What suits it best is clear light, good airflow and a substrate that dries quickly, so it can keep its body tight and healthy.
Design role: the small globular cactus that adds texture, density and a more collectible character without making a space feel visually heavy.
Taxonomic background: The name Parodia culpinensis was published in 1973 by F.H. Brandt, though in current taxonomy it is most often treated as a synonym of Parodia subterranea.
Native range and habitat: It is associated with Bolivia, especially Chuquisaca around Culpina and nearby rocky, dry, high-altitude localities.
Naming: The epithet culpinensis refers to the Culpina area, from which the name became established in cultivation.
Ecology and form: It belongs to a group of plants that live in extremely well-drained, poor and arid substrates, often staying low or partly hidden in the ground in habitat.
Related forms and distinction: In cultivation it is often recognised by its stronger hooked central spine and by the larger red flowers often associated with it compared with related forms in the same complex.
Why collectors keep the name alive: This is not a modern commercial cultivar but a botanical name that remained strongly alive in the market and in collections because of its distinctive appearance.

| 🪴 Pot / Size | 5.5 cm • height 8 cm |
| ☀️ Light | Very bright position to gentle direct sun • helps it stay compact and well formed. |
| 💧 Watering | Sparse • allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. |
| 🪨 Substrate | Very well-drained cactus mix • avoid heavy, permanently damp soils. |
| 📏 Mature size | It stays relatively low and compact, with a globose to slightly flattened shape and strong collector appeal. |
| 🌺 Flowering | Usually in shades of red, from late spring into early summer, near the crown. |
| 🪝 Distinctive feature | A strong, often hooked central spine and a low, tucked-in body that feels adapted to a hard habitat. |
It wants very strong light and can take some gentle direct sun, as long as it is acclimatised gradually. In a darker position it loses its compact look.
Very sparingly. In winter it prefers to stay almost dry, especially if it is kept in a cooler room.
Like most small cacti, it needs lots of light, the right watering rhythm and patience. When well grown, it can produce very attractive red flowers near the crown.
Yes, completely. This type is prized precisely for its low, compact form, which also reflects the hard natural habitat it comes from.
