Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 13 cm • Height: 25 cm
It grows the way it lives: slowly, quietly 🧠
A tall, slender column with clean ribs and symmetrical areoles; an elegant, architectural presence for minimal compositions.
South/east exposure with good airflow. Use a deep pot with drainage and a cactus blend amended with pumice/perlite. Water deeply, then wait until the mix is completely dry; keep almost dry in winter.
Taxonomic basis: Monotypic genus — Neocardenasia with a single species N. herzogiana, in subfamily Cactoideae.
Native range: Bolivia, dry rocky Andean slopes up to ~3000 m with wide day–night temperature swings.
Morphology/adaptations: Elongated cylindrical stem with deep ribs, regularly spaced areoles and a waxy bloom (farina) reflecting radiation. CAM metabolism for water economy.
Culture: Slow-growing; prefers full sun, very gritty mix and deep containers. Keep roots almost dry in winter.
Propagation: Mainly from seed in warm, bright conditions; slow germination with staged potting-on.
