Nandina domestica ‘Seika’ Obsessed® is a compact upright nandina producing vivid red new growth above deeper green older foliage. Numerous fine stems arise from the base and form a narrow clean mass without a heavy woody trunk. As compound leaves mature, the palette moves from red to green and returns to warmer tones in cool weather.
Use it as a narrow vertical colour accent by an entrance, repeated along a path or in a pot where red tips show above lower textures.
Silver award, Plantarium 2011.
Three elements define this exact cultivar’s form and presence.
Each new flush opens with vivid red pigment above mature foliage.
The habit is built from separate fine stems rather than one central trunk.
Upright growth provides colour without occupying a broad area.
Why you will love it: because red upper growth gains a clear presence on a compact narrow upright shrub, without excessive styling.
Allow roughly 50–60 cm of width and give sun or light partial shade, retaining space at the base for new stem renewal.
Pair the red tones with gold, dark or blue-green foliage in plants for sun or light shade and free-draining soil.
Sun to light partial shade; good light strengthens red tones without drying the root.
Maintain even moisture while establishing, then water again when the surface dries.
A hardy evergreen shrub; protect container roots from prolonged frost and freezing wind.
Not edible and contains cyanogenic compounds. Prevent children and animals from chewing leaves or any fruit.

Maintain even moisture while establishing, then water again when the surface dries.
Free-draining organic soil from slightly acidic to neutral; strong alkalinity can cause chlorosis.
Use a small dose of balanced feed in spring; excess loosens the compact habit.
Remove old or disproportionately tall stems at the base without shearing the top horizontally. Renew one old stem at the base when needed and do not cut every red tip to a horizontal line.
Watch for chlorosis in lime-rich soil and root stress when water remains in the saucer.
During the first season it directs energy into root establishment and a few strong new shoots rather than filling its final space immediately.
New tips fill gaps in the woody framework and the natural crown becomes denser without changing its basic growth type.
With long-term growth it reaches about 60–75 cm in height and 50–60 cm in width, forming a compact narrow upright shrub.
At maturity it forms a compact narrow upright shrub, about 60–75 cm × 50–60 cm.
Both drawings show the same natural architecture as foliage, flowers and active growth change.
What to expect after planting: The final habit develops gradually; retain the natural framework and assess growth over a complete season.
‘Seika’ arose as a naturally occurring whole-plant mutation of Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’. April Herring and Adriana Garza found it around July 2005 among young plants in a 72-cell tray in a greenhouse at Magnolia Gardens Nursery, Magnolia, Texas.
The selection was retained for its compact upright habit and deep-red young growth that holds colour for longer, then reproduced asexually by micropropagation at Magnolia Gardens Nursery.
The US plant-patent application was filed on 9 March 2010 and USPP21,891 was granted on 3 May 2011. ‘Seika’ is marketed as Obsessed®, protected in Europe under EU 36059 and received a silver award at Plantarium 2011.
The visible unit is a repeatedly divided compound leaf, not a cluster of independent small leaves.
Anthocyanins can reduce photo-oxidative stress while young chloroplasts mature.

Yes, in a container matched to its final scale, with open drainage holes and the upper compost refreshed each spring.
Remove old or disproportionately tall stems at the base without shearing the top horizontally.
At maturity it reaches about 60–75 cm high and 50–60 cm wide, with a natural compact narrow upright shrub.
Not edible and contains cyanogenic compounds. Prevent children and animals from chewing leaves or any fruit.
