Nandina domestica Blush Pink ('Aka'PBR) EU 36057 - Nandina
Diameter of pot:17cm, Height: 25cm.
Nandina owes its ornamental value to 3 reasons: its flowers, its decorative fruits and the wonderful colours of its leaves. How can a new variety be interesting when it lacks the first two characteristics? The answer is simple: because the third feature is so impressive!
'Aka' means red in Japanese and the plant shows just that to the fullest extent!
Every now and then a plant appears that makes you wonder if it's real or not! Nandina ‘blush pink' is one such plant, with its unusual pink leaves that later turn bright red. In fact its leaves go through a fascinating colour changing process that takes a whole year!
And while it is so striking, it requires little maintenance and provides wonderful colour to any garden throughout the year.
And while it's common for Nandina to have red or pink coloration on its leaves, it's not at all common for the plant to retain these colors as it grows. In most varieties the color turns green in a month or two, but in this variety the color remains for the entire year. The new growth in spring is pink in color that turns to red in summer and even deeper red in fall. The transformation is completed in Winter when the leaves take on a green coloration. And the new leaves begin this cycle again with the intense colorations, covering the green leaves of the previous year.
Ideal for planting in gardens either singly or in arrangements with other plants, for low borders and for planting in decorative pots. Prune in spring to promote new growth.
Hardy down to -15ºC. Maximum height: 70-100cm. For locations in full sun or partial shade.
Extra: This variety is derived from Nandina ‘This variety originated from Nandina 'firepower'. As in nature, among thousands of plants of a variety, one plant may be different from all the others. This different plant among thousands was discovered at Magnolia Gardens Nursery, Texas and Nandina ‘ blush pink'.
