The only monkey you want living in your home 🐒
Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 12 cm · Height: 30–35 cm
Monstera adansonii ‘Monkey Leaf’ stands out through narrow heart-shaped leaves whose internal fenestrations create an airy tropical pattern without breaking the outer margin.
Juvenile flexible growth can trail or climb, while stable support and ample light help successive leaves develop a more mature form.
Internal fenestrations, a fine climbing line and rapid visual development give ‘Monkey Leaf’ strong character in a small pot.
Fenestrations open within the blade and usually leave a continuous green margin around the leaf.
Stems trail without support or turn upwards once they find a surface to anchor to.
With better light and climbing growth, new leaves can gradually enlarge and become more strongly fenestrated.
Why you will love it: it delivers the iconic geometry of a Monstera at a flexible smaller scale that fits easily on a shelf or support.
Show it on a shelf or low stand near a bright window, adding a slim support if you want larger, more upright leaves. Matte white, charcoal or natural ceramic lets the perforated foliage read clearly.
Use contrasting aroid textures and one undivided fern so the fenestrations remain the central pattern.
Abundant bright indirect light. Gentle morning sun only after gradual acclimation.
Water when the top 2–4 cm dries, then let all excess drain completely.
Keep at 18–28°C with moderate to raised humidity and gentle airflow, away from cold draughts.
Not pet-safe. Aroid tissues contain irritating insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.
Provide bright indirect light near an east-facing or filtered south-facing window. Very low light reduces new-leaf size, while hot direct sun can scorch the blades.
Water when the top 2–4 cm dries, wetting the entire root ball. Empty the saucer or outer pot and do not keep roots permanently saturated.
Stable moderate to raised humidity helps a new leaf open cleanly. Pair it with gentle air movement and clean foliage rather than constant wetting.
Keep ideally at 18–28°C and above 16°C. A slim support gives aerial roots somewhere to anchor and encourages more upright, mature growth.
Use a chunky, airy aroid mix in a pot with unobstructed drainage. Move up only one pot size once roots fill the container, without burying the crown more deeply.
During active growth, use Nutri One, a complete liquid NPK feed with trace elements, only as directed and never on bone-dry mix. After repotting into a fresh enriched substrate, wait before feeding so nutrition is not needlessly doubled.
Monstera adansonii is an accepted species in the Araceae. ‘Monkey Leaf’ is widely used as a cultivated trade designation and is not a separate accepted species.
The species is native to tropical America, where it climbs vegetation in wet tropical forests.
European trade has often linked ‘Monkey Leaf’ incorrectly with Monstera obliqua. The cultivated product corresponds to M. adansonii; true M. obliqua is far rarer and taxonomically distinct.
The characteristic holes are normal mature-blade morphology, not insect damage. Their pattern is influenced by age, light and support.
Roots at the nodes help the climbing stem attach to surfaces and exploit moisture above the ground.
A flexible joint close to the blade allows the leaf to adjust its orientation towards available light.
Araceae tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing releases these microscopic raphides and causes immediate oral irritation.
Practical answers about behaviour, common signs and correct care for this plant.
Very young leaves can be entire. Stable bright indirect light, support and time increase the chance of more mature morphology in later leaves.
Check the top 2–4 cm and the pot's weight. If the surface is dry but the interior is not completely dehydrated, water fully and allow it to drain.
Yes. Cut just above a node with a clean tool during active growth. A section with at least one healthy node can root, while the parent stem may activate a new bud.
Lower light, no stable support, a recent repot or fluctuating watering can temporarily reduce size. Judge the trend across two or three consecutive leaves.
It is not necessary. You can guide them gently towards the mix or a support without forcing sharp bends or cutting them purely for appearance.
Not for chewing or ingestion. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause oral pain, drooling and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach and contact a vet or doctor if exposure occurs.
