× Mangave ‘Pineapple Express’ builds a dense upright rosette resembling an exotic pineapple, with grey-green leaves covered in burgundy spots. Slender elongated leaves create movement while darker marking toward the centre adds remarkable depth.
Its architectural strength is matched by lively growth, providing immediate statement scale without losing its disciplined outline. The spotted surface remains engaging from both side and top views. This highly recognisable selection suits modern interiors or collections seeking dramatic geometry without waiting decades.
Three defining details that turn its botanical identity into real presence for a collection and interior.
Upright symmetry and a dense centre create the characteristic exotic outline.
The pattern deepens under strong light and makes every leaf individual.
The hybrid quickly forms a dense rosette and offsets while retaining a clean structure.
Why you’ll love it: it offers documented hybrid history, bold pattern and mature architectural presence much faster than a classic Agave.
Display it in substantial terracotta, concrete or matte black ceramic with enough room for the leaves to open freely. It is spectacular from a lower position where the upright silhouette rises into view. Avoid narrow traffic areas because of toothed margins and terminal points.
Pair it with plants that genuinely share its light, substrate and seasonal rhythm. Separate pots keep care precise for each one.
Abundant sun after acclimation for a dense rosette and deep burgundy pattern.
Water thoroughly once most of the mix has dried.
Warm active growth, airflow and protection from frost and winter moisture.
Sharp leaves and potentially irritating sap require gloves and distance from children and animals.
Provide the brightest available position and acclimate it gradually to direct sun. More safe light deepens the spotting and keeps leaves upright, while shade elongates them.
Water deeply once most of the mix has dried and allow immediate drainage. The hybrid grows faster than many Agave and uses more water in active warmth without tolerating constant moisture.
Maintain air between the many upright leaves and avoid water sitting in the centre. Remove dry lower foliage with gloves because of the sharp edges.
Growth is strong in warmth and slows in cold conditions. In winter keep the rosette bright and drier, protected from frost and prolonged rain.
Use a rapidly draining mix with mineral components in a stable pot that supports the developing crown. Repot when roots have genuinely filled the available space.
During active growth, provide dilute low- to moderate-nitrogen nutrition with adequate potassium. Frequent strong feeding softens leaves and weakens the strict form.
× Mangave ‘Pineapple Express’ is a Manfreda × Agave hybrid recorded in US patent application US20170290244. It is not a wild species.
Hans Hansen made the cross on 12 July 2011 at a nursery in Zeeland, Michigan: seed parent × Mangave ‘Jaguar’ and pollen parent × Mangave ‘Bloodspot’.
Seed was collected on 7 November 2011 and the selection recorded as XMAN11-18-05. Division and tissue culture confirmed stability of the rosette and pattern.
From natural habitat to care: The cultivar has no wild habitat, but its two parental lineages explain its character: Agave contributes architecture and drought tolerance, while Manfreda brings faster growth, softer leaves and bold pattern. Care balances those two inheritances.
Placed before the name, it indicates a cultivated group derived from a cross between different genera.
Vegetative propagation preserves the anthocyanin distribution responsible for the burgundy pattern.
Combining different parental lines can provide greater vigour than slower pure agaves.
Lateral rosettes share the same genetic material and retain the pineapple-like form and spotting.
Useful answers about light, watering, seasonal rhythm and the plant’s correct identity.
It is a cultivated group of hybrids between Manfreda and Agave, combining traits from both lineages.
Yes. The patent records × Mangave ‘Jaguar’ as seed parent and × Mangave ‘Bloodspot’ as pollen parent.
Usually because of lower light or very rapid soft growth. Increase safe light gradually and avoid excess nitrogen.
When most of the mix has dried and the pot becomes lighter. Water thoroughly and allow immediate drainage.
Yes, the cultivar is known for vigorous lateral growth. Offsets can remain for a full clump or be separated once rooted.
Margins and terminal points can injure, and sap may irritate. Wear gloves and keep it out of reach.
