Family: Apocynaceae • Pot diameter: 19cm (3L) • Height: 70–80cm
Fiery red that glows in the summer sun ❤️
Large, velvety deep red flowers over glossy dark foliage for strong contrast. Ideal for pots, planters and climbing with support — tropical presence with very little fuss.
Place it in a warm, bright spot, protected from strong wind. It needs a pot with plenty of drainage holes and a rich, well-draining mix such as peat-based potting soil with perlite. Water when around 40–50% of the substrate has dried, and avoid stagnant water at the base. Feeding with a flowering-plant fertiliser supports stronger blooming. Protect it from frost and cold conditions.
Natural group & distribution: The genus Mandevilla is native to tropical South and Central America, where many species grow in warm, bright habitats such as forest edges, with a natural climbing habit and a preference for good drainage.
Breeding background: Rio® is a cultivated Mandevilla series developed by Suntory Flowers in cooperation with nursery partners, selected for strong flowering, heat tolerance and a manageable, compact habit suitable for pots and planters.
How it differs from related types:
Propagation & stability: Cultivated Rio® selections are maintained vegetatively, so the key ornamental traits remain stable: flower colour, compact growth and strong seasonal performance.
Garden value: It is widely used in balconies, planters and summer displays thanks to its intense colour, easy care and long flowering period.
