Small in size, spectacular when it decides to flower 😏
Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 8.5 cm • Height: 15 cm
Lobivia arachnacantha is a small, spherical to slightly clustering cactus with fine spines, clean geometric form and remarkably showy flowers for its size. Its compact green body creates a discreet but very elegant base, while the flowers can appear in warm tones, from yellow and orange to red, depending on the clone. It is ideal for bright windowsills, small pots and carefully arranged cactus collections, combining small size, easy care and flowering with real visual presence.
Place it in a very bright position, with sun after gradual acclimation, so it keeps a compact form and good flowering potential. Indoors, choose a spot close to a very bright window, while outdoors it suits a protected balcony or patio without prolonged winter moisture. The growing mix should be mineral, light and very free-draining, with watering only when the pot has dried completely.
Taxonomic history: Lobivia arachnacantha belongs to the family Cactaceae and remains very well known in cultivation under the name Lobivia. In current taxonomic use it is often encountered as Echinopsis arachnacantha, as several plants once cultivated under Lobivia have been placed within a wider Echinopsis framework.
Native range & habitat: The species comes from Bolivia, where it grows in dry shrubland environments and open, bright positions with very good drainage. This background explains its need for strong light, mineral growing mix and careful watering, with a drier period in winter.
Naming & morphology: The epithet arachnacantha refers to the fine, spider-like spines that spread around the body of the plant. Its form is small, spherical to slightly clustering, with ribs and areoles that give clear texture without making the plant visually heavy.
Spread & decorative value: Lobivia arachnacantha is valued for its easy cultivation and impressive flowering. In a small pot it works as a clean, bright focal point, while in cactus collections it stands out because it combines compact size, fine spine texture and flowers with strong colour.

It needs a very bright position and can receive sun with gradual acclimation. Indoors, choose a spot close to a very bright window.
Water sparsely, only when the growing mix has dried completely. In winter, watering should be very limited, especially if the plant is kept in a cooler spot.
It can flower impressively when it has enough light, a proper winter rest and a healthy, dry root system. Flower colour appears in warm tones, depending on the clone.
It needs a very free-draining, mineral cactus mix with enough inorganic material such as pumice, perlite or gravel. Heavy, wet growing mix should be avoided.
