Fiery leaves like lotus petals over a slow flame 🔥
Family: Crassulaceae · Nursery pot diameter: 5.5 cm
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora forms an upright, tightly layered rosette of large rounded leaves, each carrying a soft glaucous bloom and the clean outline of a paddle.
In strong light, the margins gradually flush red and give the rosette a bold graphic edge. Mature plants can send a tall inflorescence above the leaves, carrying numerous yellowish tubular flowers.
Its character comes from the scale of the leaves, their glaucous surface and their colour response to light.

A waxy surface softens the green into a matt, blue-grey texture.
Leaf margins develop stronger anthocyanin colour when the plant receives abundant light without scorching.
Why you’ll love it: it turns a small pot into a composed botanical object and shifts colour without losing its clean form.
Place it close to a bright south- or west-facing window, leaving visual space around the rosette. Terracotta or matt ceramics in earthy tones emphasise the glaucous finish.
Pair it with plants that enjoy strong light and a thorough dry-down, but keep them in separate pots so each can be watered independently.
Very bright light with gentle direct sun after gradual acclimatisation.
Water thoroughly only after the mix has dried to the bottom.
Warm active growth, airflow around the rosette and protection from frost.
Kalanchoe contain cardiac glycosides; keep it away from pets that chew plants.

It does not require high atmospheric humidity. Good airflow helps the rosette and potting mix dry promptly after watering.
Growth is strongest with warmth and abundant light. During the darker winter slowdown, keep it bright, above roughly 8°C and substantially drier.
Use an airy succulent mix with a high mineral fraction and unobstructed drainage holes. A large, persistently wet root zone increases the risk of rot.
Feed lightly only while new leaves are actively forming. After repotting into Sybasoil, allow its initial nutrition to be used before adding Cactus & Succulent Focus.
The accepted name is Kalanchoe thyrsiflora Harv., a species in the Crassulaceae.
William Henry Harvey published Kalanchoe thyrsiflora in 1862 in Flora Capensis. This is a botanical species, not a named horticultural cultivar.
Its native range extends from Botswana and South Africa’s northern provinces to Eswatini, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Lesotho, in seasonally dry grassland and rocky sites.
From natural habitat to care: Seasonal drought and open, bright sites in the wild help explain its water-storing leaves and high light requirement. In a pot, that translates into deep but infrequent watering, rapid drainage and a clear reduction in water when growth slows.
Its glaucous coating is a wax layer that affects light reflection and how water wets the leaf surface.
Anthocyanin accumulation often intensifies in strong light or cool conditions and is not, by itself, evidence that the plant needs water.
Stomata open mainly at night, allowing the plant to limit daytime water loss.
A mature rosette completes its cycle after flowering, while basal offsets can continue the plant.
Answers on red colouring, proper dry-down, the winter slowdown and mature flowering.
It needs abundant light and can take direct sun after acclimatisation. Colour is also influenced by temperature and genetics, so do not force it abruptly into harsh midday sun.
Wait until the mix is dry throughout and the pot feels lighter. Then water evenly and allow all excess to drain away.
Flatter, more widely spaced new growth often points to insufficient light. Move it gradually to a brighter position; old growth will not tighten, but new growth can become more compact.
With less light it uses far less water. Keep it bright and frost-free, allow the mix to dry completely and do not feed when it is not actively growing.
Flowering requires a mature rosette, so a young plant needs time. Strong light and healthy seasonal growth help, but cannot guarantee a date.
It should not be chewed. Kalanchoe can cause gastrointestinal and cardiac signs; keep it out of reach and contact a vet if ingestion occurs.
