Family: Cupressaceae • Pot diameter: 13 cm • Height: ~50–55 cm
Slim, architectural form with blue-green foliage. A tough evergreen conifer for full sun and well-drained sandy/rocky soils with low maintenance needs.
Plant in full sun and well-drained sandy/rocky substrate. Water deeply and infrequently, letting soil dry out. Avoid heavy, wet soils. Prune lightly and only into green growth—this cultivar does not regenerate from old wood.
Taxonomy: Juniperus chinensis shows a wide range of cultivars and adaptability across climates.
Range & habitat: East Asia (China–Japan). Dry slopes and rocky, fast-draining substrates.
Name: Juniperus = juniper; chinensis = “Chinese”; ‘Stricta’ = narrow, upright habit.
Cultivar traits: Columnar, dense crown, blue-green colour—ideal for vertical accents and compact beds.
Ecology: Evergreen conifer; juvenile foliage awl-like, maturing to more scale-like; best colour in full sun.
Propagation: Clonal cuttings for trait fidelity. Does not break from old wood—prune cautiously.
Grower notes: Roots dislike prolonged moisture/poor drainage; watch for scale on stressed plants.
