‘Old Gold’ was found in the mid-1950s at F. J. Grootendorst’s nursery in Boskoop, the Netherlands, growing on a plant of ‘Pfitzeriana Aurea’.

The selection was retained for its more compact, lower growth and mellower golden-green colour. It subsequently became established as a distinct cultivar in the Juniperus × pfitzeriana group.
