Family: Cupressaceae • Pot diameter: 13 cm • Height: ~20 cm
Low, creeping conifer with glaucous blue foliage and strong groundcovering habit. Ideal for full sun, slopes/gravel and freely draining soils.
Plant in full sun and freely draining sandy/rocky soils. Water deeply and infrequently, letting soil dry out. Avoid heavy, wet soils and persistent root moisture. Pruning is minimal—remove dead bits and lightly check spread; do not cut back into old wood.
Species: Juniperus horizontalis — North American groundcover species with many blue-toned cultivars.
Range & habitat: Cool to temperate North America; rocky, nutrient-poor sites, slopes and sandy shores.
Name: horizontalis = creeping habit; ‘Blue Chip’ highlights the vivid blue-glaucous colour.
Traits: Very low canopy (10–20 cm) with even spread; stable blue foliage in full sun.
Ecology: Evergreen scale/needle foliage; wind and cold tolerant once established.
Propagation: Clonal cuttings to keep colour/habit true. Limited pruning; does not regenerate from old wood.
Grower notes: Avoid prolonged moisture/poor drainage (root rots). Sun and airflow are key in humid climates.
