Family: Cupressaceae • Pot diameter: 13 cm • Height: ~20 cm
It hides soil, stones and tiny design dramas like a pro 🕵️
A low, ground-covering conifer with silvery-blue foliage and an even, flat spread. Ideal for full sun and sharply drained substrates.
Full sun and a sharply draining substrate (sandy/stony). Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Avoid heavy, wet soils and standing water. Prune sparingly — remove dead bits only; it does not break from old wood.
Taxonomic background: Juniperus squamata — Himalayan/West China species (Cupressaceae) with scale/awl foliage and many glaucous cultivars.
Habitat & range: Mountainous, rocky substrates with high drainage; cool to temperate zones with strong sunlight.
Name etymology: squamata = scaly; ‘Blue Carpet’ describes the silvery-blue, carpet-forming habit.
‘Blue Carpet’ character: Very low canopy, flat spread, stable blue-silver colour in full sun and good airflow.
Ecology & biology: Evergreen; juvenile foliage awl-like, often shifting to more scale-like on mature sections.
Propagation & stability: Clonal cuttings for faithful colour/habit. Prune only green growth — avoid cuts into old wood.
Cultural risks: Sensitive to prolonged moisture/poor drainage (rots). Exposure and airflow are key in humid climates.

Water deeply but infrequently with excellent drainage. Let the substrate dry; avoid saucers/standing water.
Very free-draining, sandy or stony medium, poor–medium in organic matter. In heavy soils add grit/pumice and plant on a slight mound.
Not routinely; just remove dead sections and lightly check the perimeter. Avoid cutting into old wood.
