Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red'® — Hydrangea
Chameleon hydrangea for gardens that change their mind 🎨
Family: Hydrangeaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: ~30 cm
Hydrangeaceae Deciduous shrub Light: sun–partial shade Care: easy–moderate Medium-sized shrub
The Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red'® is a true “chameleon” hydrangea: its elongated panicles, up to 30 cm long, start pure white, turn soft pink over summer and mature to a deep wine-red, accompanied by a delicate honey-like fragrance. Strong, upright stems hold the flower heads proudly without flopping, making it an ideal choice for borders, mixed shrub beds, informal hedges and large pots near terraces or entrances in light shade.

Slightly acidic to neutral, organic, with good drainage.
What makes it special
- 🎨 Spectacular colour change: from white to pink and finally deep wine-red.
- 🌸 Large panicles up to 30 cm long with a subtle honey fragrance.
- 🪵 Strong, upright stems that keep flower heads in place without collapsing.
- ⏳ Very long flowering period, from late spring into autumn.
Best uses
- 🏡 In borders and shrub beds as a key colour shrub throughout the season.
- 🪴 In large pots on terraces, patios or entrances with sun–partial shade.
- ✂️ For cut flowers in vases or dried flower heads in indoor arrangements.
Where to place it
'Wim's Red' performs best in light shade: morning sun and afternoon shade, or bright half-day light, give rich colour without stressing the plant. In cooler or more northern locations it can take more sun, as long as the soil stays cool and evenly moist. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils that stay wet for long periods, but also very dry, poor slopes with little organic matter. In containers, it needs a generous volume and high-quality shrub compost so the rootball does not dry out too quickly in summer.
What to combine it with
- With other flowering shrubs (e.g. Rosa, Spiraea, Physocarpus) for continuous bloom and colour succession.
- With ornamental grasses to add movement and texture around the base of the hydrangea.
- With perennials in soft or neutral tones so that the colour shifts of the panicles remain the main focal point.
Design goal: a key shrub in borders or large pots that holds interest from late spring to late autumn with its evolving colour phases.
Origin of the cultivar click to read
Taxonomic background: Hydrangea paniculata belongs to the genus Hydrangea in the family Hydrangeaceae, a group of shrubs that have become staples in temperate gardens. Paniculata hydrangeas differ from the classic Hydrangea macrophylla types through their elongated panicle-shaped flower heads and higher cold tolerance.
Natural range & habitat: Wild H. paniculata species are native to Eastern Asia (China, Japan, Russia), where they grow on bright woodland edges and in cool, humus-rich soils. From the 19th century onwards they were introduced to European botanical gardens and nurseries, quickly becoming popular ornamental garden shrubs.
Naming & character of the cultivar: The trade name 'Wim's Red'® refers to the striking transition of the flowers to a deep red shade towards the end of the season and to the contribution of a specific European nursery line (Wim) in selecting it. Its “chameleon” flowering habit places it among the most interesting paniculata cultivars for shrub collections.
Selection & propagation: This cultivar was selected for its combination of early flowering, strong colour transitions, scented panicles and sturdy, upright stems. It is propagated vegetatively (cuttings) to maintain stable colour and shrub structure, and is distributed through specialist ornamental shrub nurseries.
1) Planting & substrate: Plant in cool, fertile, well-drained soil, or in a high-quality shrub compost in a large pot. Work in compost or well-rotted organic matter to improve structure and moisture retention.
2) Watering & feeding: Keep the soil lightly moist, avoiding extreme swings from very dry to very wet. Feed in spring and early summer with a balanced fertiliser for flowering shrubs, avoiding excessive nitrogen which encourages foliage at the expense of flower quality.
3) Pruning & structure: Paniculata hydrangeas flower on new wood, so prune in early spring, reducing last year’s stems to about one-third to one-half of their height to encourage branching and strong flower heads. Remove any dead or weak stems to improve air circulation.
Pruning — how & when ✂️ how-to
Hydrangea paniculata cultivars such as 'Wim's Red'® flower on the current season’s wood, so the ideal pruning time is late winter to early spring (late February–early March, after the risk of hard frosts). Shorten last year’s flowering stems evenly to 2–3 buds from their base (usually leaving 20–40 cm, depending on the size you want) to stimulate strong new shoots with large, well-supported panicles. Remove weak, inward-growing or crossing stems completely to keep an open framework and good air flow; aim for around 8–12 main stems in total, depending on the plant’s age and size. To rejuvenate older plants, cut about one-third of the oldest stems down low each year. In containers, use slightly harder pruning to maintain a compact, upright shape that can carry the weight of the flower heads. The dried flower heads can be left on over winter for decorative effect and removed in spring. Always work with clean tools and water and feed moderately after pruning.
💡 Tip: For a deeper red at the end of the season, place your hydrangea where it receives plenty of light (ideally morning sun) and keep the soil rich but not overloaded with nitrogen.
🤔 Did you know? Paniculata hydrangeas like 'Wim's Red'® do not change colour according to soil pH in the same way as classic blue/pink macrophylla types. Their shades are influenced mainly by the cultivar, light and temperature, which is why the white–pink–red colour shift is a stable characteristic.
Why you'll love it info
- 🎨 For its “chameleon” flowering with three distinct colour phases.
- 🌸 For its large, fragrant flowers that stand out from a distance.
- 🪵 For its strong stems that hold the panicles upright without leaning.
- ⏳ Because it fills borders or pots with interest from early summer into late autumn.
🧠 Greenleaf for nerds — scientific facts nobody asked for geek
- 🧬 Paniculata hydrangeas flower on new wood, which explains why pruning in early spring does not reduce flowering and often improves it.
- 🌱 High organic matter content and stable moisture in the root zone help maintain large, well-formed panicles.
- 💨 The intensity of the red colour is linked to anthocyanin production, which is boosted by cool nights and good light levels towards the end of the season.
- 🧪 In nursery production, 'Wim's Red'® is valued for its combination of early flowering and long-lasting display, reducing “colour gaps” in the garden calendar.
What light does it need? light
Ideally sun–partial shade: morning sun and afternoon shade or bright half-day light. In cooler regions it tolerates more sun, while in very hot locations it is best to protect it from harsh midday sun.
How should I water it and what soil does it need? water/soil
It prefers cool, fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Water so that the soil stays lightly moist without drying out completely between waterings, but also without waterlogging at the roots.
When and how do I prune it? pruning
Prune in early spring before strong growth starts, cutting stems back to about one-third to one-half of their height. Remove dead, weak or inward-growing stems for better structure and airflow, remembering that flowering occurs on new wood.
Is it suitable for pots or only for the garden? pot
It is suitable both for planting in the ground and for large pots. In containers, choose a pot with sufficient volume and good drainage, use quality shrub compost and water more regularly, especially in summer.
