Hydrangeas are loved for their rich flower clusters and remarkable decorative value. Depending on the variety, their blooms appear in beautiful shades of white, pink, red, purple or blue.
What affects the color?
In several Hydrangea macrophylla varieties, soil pH and aluminium availability can influence blue and pink flower tones. However, not every hydrangea variety changes color.

Flower buds may form on old wood, new growth or both, depending on the species and variety. Always check the needs of the specific hydrangea before pruning.
Plant Care
Location
Choose a partially shaded position with gentle morning sun. Protect the plant from intense midday and afternoon summer sunlight.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist without leaving it waterlogged. Check potted plants frequently during hot weather and reduce watering in winter after the leaves have fallen.
Temperature
Most established hydrangeas tolerate frost, although hardiness varies by species and variety. Protect young plants and potted specimens from severe or prolonged frost.
Pruning
Pruning depends on the species and variety. Some hydrangeas flower on old wood, others on new growth, and some on both. Always check the requirements of the specific variety before pruning.
Fertilization
During the growing season, apply a fertilizer formulated for hydrangeas, following the product dosage. Avoid overfertilizing, as it may encourage foliage at the expense of flowers.
Height & Growth Rate
Final height and spread depend on the variety. Compact hydrangeas may remain below 1 metre, while larger varieties can reach approximately 3 metres.
Pet Safety
Hydrangeas are not safe for dogs or cats if ingested. Keep the plant away from pets that tend to chew leaves or flowers.
Origin
Hydrangea species originate mainly from Asia and the Americas.
Substrate
Use a rich, moisture-retentive substrate that also drains well. A slightly acidic to neutral mix suits most hydrangeas. Soil pH can influence flower colour in certain varieties of Hydrangea macrophylla.
