A colourful, bright panicle hydrangea with a true confetti effect 🌈
Family: Hydrangeaceae • Pot diameter: 19cm (3L) • Height: 30–40cm
‘Confetti’ is the hydrangea that makes every corner feel like a celebration: fluffy panicle-shaped blooms open in creamy white, pick up soft pink brush marks and finish the season with warmer tones, like tiny pieces of confetti scattered across the plant. Its form stays upright and clean, with enough volume to fill borders or large pots without looking heavy. Ideal for modern gardens, entrances and patios where you want premium seasonal colour with a polished look from day one.
Choose a position with sun to partial shade and good air circulation. In a pot, use a large container with excellent drainage, so the volume and upright form of the flowering stems are well supported without becoming too heavy.
Composition goal: clean geometry, soft but rich seasonal colour and balanced volumes.
Taxonomic background: Hydrangea paniculata belongs to the family Hydrangeaceae and is known for its large panicle-shaped inflorescences and flowering on new wood, which allows safe pruning in late winter.
Selection/breeding & distribution: ‘Confetti’ carries the selection code ‘Vlasveld 02’ and is protected by PBR. It was selected for its multicoloured transitions within the same flower panicle, dense upright framework and overall growth stability.
Creation story — selection narrative: It was developed in a Dutch nursery as a clonal selection from a large number of Hydrangea paniculata seedlings, with the goal of creating a panicle hydrangea that visually resembled confetti on the plant, while keeping the hardiness and clean structure valued by professional garden designers.
Hydrangea paniculata flowers on new wood, so the ideal pruning time is late winter to early spring, usually from late February to early March after hard frosts have passed. Shorten the previous year’s flowering stems evenly to 2–3 buds from their base, usually leaving 20–40cm depending on the desired height, to encourage strong new growth with large flower panicles. Remove weak, inward-facing or crossing stems completely to maintain a clean framework and good air circulation; aim for 8–12 main stems. For rejuvenating older plants, cut around one third of the oldest stems back to the base each year. In a pot, a slightly shorter pruning approach helps maintain a sturdy, upright shape. The dried flower heads can remain for winter interest and be removed in spring. Work with clean tools and, after pruning, support the plant with proper watering and light feeding.
