Hibiscus syriacus ‘Rwoods5’ Magenta Chiffon® gives the second half of summer a colour that feels deep, velvety and almost electric. Broad magenta petals surround a rich centre of petaloid staminodes, like a small rosette folded inside the corolla. Against the upright dark-green crown, every flower gains a clear outline and supplies intensity just as spring-flowering shrubs have quietened.

As a vertical accent in a sunny border, flowering hedge or large container, it supplies height without dense evergreen weight. Late bloom links summer with autumn and creates a second peak among ornamental grasses and long-season perennials.

The seasonal cycle of Hibiscus syriacus ‘Rwoods5’ MAGENTA CHIFFON® is a deciduous hardy woody shrub; its bare winter form is natural.

History & originCultivar originA true member of Dr Roderick Woods’ Chiffon Series: flower-structure breeding, not simply a new colour.

Within Dr Roderick Ian Woods’ Norfolk programme, seed for ‘Rwoods5’ came from a planned 2006 cross using proprietary selection 7060 as the seed parent and 5954 as the pollen parent. The objective was a fuller flower with a clear, intense magenta colour.

An interesting seedling was identified in September 2008 and final selection followed in 2011. Grafting and softwood cuttings confirmed that the fully double RHS Red-Purple 71B flower, vigorous growth and good branching repeated true to type. The cultivar was later protected under USPP29683.

Proven Winners introduced it into the Chiffon Series as MAGENTA CHIFFON®. A Plantarium silver medal in 2016 recognised a genuine expansion of the series: not another pastel variation, but a deep magenta, almost fully double expression of its characteristic chiffon structure.

Near-complete petaloidy

In ‘Rwoods5’, the identity shift within the male floral whorl is extensive: many stamens develop as broad petaloid staminodes that fill the centre. Magenta Chiffon® therefore approaches a double rather than the usual semi-double form.
