Restrained, refined, and definitely not accidental 🌿
Family: Asphodelaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5 cm
The Haworthia angustifolia var. baylissii stands out for its small dense rosette and its narrow lance-shaped leaves, which open elegantly outward to create a calm but highly refined look. It does not rely on strong colour to catch the eye; its strength lies in form, detail and in the way it slowly builds neat little clusters over time. This is a succulent that looks exceptional in small pots, on bright shelves and in clean, considered compositions where you want a plant that feels quiet but never uninteresting.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally with abundant indirect light or gentle morning sun. It works beautifully in east- or west-facing windows, in bright workspaces and in interiors with good air movement. It does not want to stay constantly wet, nor should it bake under intense summer sun. With the right light, the rosette stays dense, clean and balanced, and over time it begins to form attractive little groups.
Styling goal: small scale, clean forms and a plant that adds texture without visually weighing down the space.
Taxonomic position: Haworthia angustifolia var. baylissii is treated as an accepted variety of Haworthia angustifolia within the family Asphodelaceae, and belongs to the group of South African succulents valued for foliage detail and small dense growth.
Geographic origin: It is associated with the Zuurberg mountains of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, where it occurs in a limited area on rocky, bright but not excessively exposed sites.
What sets it apart: Compared with the typical species, baylissii is noted for its shorter, broader leaves and for the more compact overall look of the rosette, which gives it a denser, fuller character.
Naming: The epithet baylissii honours Roy Bayliss, whose collections contributed to the recognition of this plant form and its later placement within the variability of Haworthia angustifolia.

Yes, over time it produces offsets from the base and forms small dense clusters.
Yes, as long as it sits in a genuinely very bright spot. It is not a plant for a deep, dark interior.
