Round, tidy, and utterly disarming 😌
Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5 cm
A compact, globose cactus with strong vertical ribs that create colour “bands” from deep purple-olive to lighter grey-green. Spines are short and neat, allowing the body geometry to shine. Pale blossoms (usually pink to white) emerge like elegant goblets, adding delicacy without visual weight.
Very bright to sunny position with airflow. Use a cactus/pumice mix and a pot with a drainage hole for excellent runoff.
Goal: showcase the ribs, keep lines clean, encourage close viewing.
Origin & identity: A South American genus; this group is prized for its spherical, ribbed body and strong tonal contrast along the flanks.
Morphology: Distinct “ribs” divide the body into segments; short, tidy spines that don’t obscure the geometry.
Bloom: Pink to off-white flowers in elegant tubular forms — a hallmark of Gymnocalycium.
Collector value: Loved for its steady symmetry and “graphic” look that pops in curated mini displays.
