Small, quiet and very well designed 🧊
Family: Asphodelaceae • Pot diameter: 6.5 cm
Gasteria cv. Green Ice is a small, elegant succulent with thick grey-green leaves, a soft cool tone and subtle markings that add depth to the surface. Its growth is compact and slow, with leaves forming a low, full rosette that keeps a clean appearance for a long time. It looks beautiful on bright shelves, desks, windowsills and in small succulent arrangements, especially when you want something different from a classic echeveria but just as easy to care for. It prefers filtered light, well-draining soil and sparse watering, maintaining its attractive texture without a demanding routine.
Place it in a bright position with indirect or filtered light, near a window but not exposed to strong summer sun. Gasterias and their related hybrids tolerate bright partial shade better than many other succulents, as long as they are not kept in a dark spot. Avoid constantly wet soil, cold drafts and pots without drainage. Outdoors, choose a protected position with morning light or bright shade.
Taxonomic background: The plant is sold commercially as Gasteria cv. Green Ice, while it is also often referred to as ×Gasteraloe ‘Green Ice’, a cultivated hybrid with character from Gasteria and Aloe. Both genera belong to the family Asphodelaceae, within a group of succulents with fleshy leaves and strong tolerance of drier periods.
Natural origin of the parent groups: Gasterias are naturally distributed mainly in South Africa and are known for their thick, often tongue-shaped leaves. Many species grow in protected, bright positions, often with more filtered light than many other succulents require.
Cultivated character: ‘Green Ice’ stands out for its low, compact growth, grey-green leaves and subtle spots or lines on the surface. Its overall appearance is calm, clean and especially suitable for small pots and bright indoor spaces.
Morphological value: The leaves are thick, relatively flat and arranged densely, creating a rosette that becomes fuller with age. The cool grey-green colour and soft markings give the impression of an “icy” surface, which is also where much of the commercial appeal of the name comes from.
Ornamental use: Its slow growth and controlled size make it ideal for desks, bright shelves, windowsills and succulent arrangements where stable form, interesting texture and low maintenance are preferred.
