One metre of height, two metres of cheer 🎉
Family: Oleaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: 20–25 cm • Deciduous
Forsythia × intermedia ‘Minigold’ delivers spring’s most recognisable signal: dense stems uniformly covered in bright yellow flowers before the leaves even unfold. Its compact, tight habit keeps lines clean and makes it easy to place in window boxes or small borders, while the modest height creates a coherent look in rows, entrances and edges. In practice it acts like an “instant-interest button”: it lights up the space from day one, suits classic or contemporary schemes, and stays tidy year-round so the spring burst of colour can take centre stage without visual clutter.
Sun to part shade with good drainage. Ideal for repeated planting that “reads” clearly from the first spring.
Composition goal: clear outline, cohesive look, early colour.
Taxonomic history: Forsythia × intermedia — a hybrid between F. suspensa and F. viridissima, recorded in Europe since the early 20th century. Family Oleaceae.
Range & spread: An ornamental genus native to East Asia; widely adopted in temperate regions as a symbol of early spring.
Etymology: The genus honours Scottish botanist William Forsyth (1737–1804). The epithet intermedia denotes an “intermediate” character between the parent species.
Selection & propagation: ‘Minigold’ was selected in Europe for dwarf size, dense branching and uniform, early flowering in vivid yellow. Propagated vegetatively for even performance in mass and small-scale plantings.
