Geometric symmetry with a cactus-like look 🌵
Family: Euphorbiaceae • Pot diameter: 12 cm, Height: 20 cm
Pentagonal, fleshy stems with delicate “spines” along the ridges; over time it forms architectural clumps and forgives small care mistakes.
Full sun or a very bright position with strong diffuse light. Pot with a drainage hole and a clearly free-draining, mineral mix; water sparingly, only when the substrate has completely dried out.
Taxonomic history: The name Euphorbia pentagona is attributed to Haworth (Haw.) and carries the note non L. to distinguish it from a homonym described by Linnaeus. In cultivation it is used for a dwarf, five-angled Euphorbia with fleshy stems.
Habitat & distribution: Of South African origin, found in dry, rocky or sandy substrates with excellent drainage. Often in positions with full sun, where the stems stay compact and strongly angular.
Naming (etymology): pentagona = “five-angled”; it refers to the characteristic five-sided cross section of the stems and their prominent ridges.
Ecology & biology: A succulent with reduced/short-lived leaves; the stems take over most of the photosynthetic function. The cyathia are small and greenish; the white, milky latex has irritating properties.
Related species & distinction: It can be confused with other five- or multi-angled Euphorbia species (e.g. E. enopla, E. mammillaris when young). E. pentagona maintains consistently five clear ridges and a more regular geometry, with finer, more discreet “spines” along the angles.
Propagation & stability: Propagated by stem cuttings and offsets; cuts are left to callous so that latex flow stops before planting. In cultivation it forms stable, dense clumps.
Conservation status & threats: Wild populations are affected by habitat loss and collection from the wild; always prefer nursery-propagated plants.

Very rarely; water only when the substrate has dried out completely, even in depth.
A sharply draining cactus mix (pumice/perlite/coarse sand) with just a small amount of organic matter.
It does best above 10–12°C. If temperatures drop, keep the plant completely dry and sheltered from frost.
