Your legal guarantee rights

What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Pretty in pink, cautious with hugs 🌵

Family: Euphorbiaceae · Pot diameter: 10 cm · Height: approximately 26 cm

Euphorbiaceae
Pink bracts
Spiny stems
Shrubby habit
Bright position

Euphorbia milii ‘Charlotte’ sets soft pink against a form full of character. Broad, rounded bracts create small clusters of colour above the green foliage, while spiny stems add a rougher detail to its gentle appearance. This contrast gives it presence: delicate colour, clear lines and a silhouette that is difficult to overlook.

Leaves gather mainly towards the younger tips, revealing the branching framework below. Rather than forming an uninterrupted mass of green, ‘Charlotte’ has small openings, different levels and colourful tips that add depth. Beside more geometric succulents, it introduces the movement of a small shrub and a touch of pink that changes the whole arrangement.

What makes it special

Three details create the distinctive contrast of ‘Charlotte’.

Pink above green

The striking colour belongs to bracts surrounding the very small flowers. Their broad surface makes the floral display stand out above the leaves.

Visible branching

Sturdy stems build a small shrubby form. The spines remain conspicuous even when the tips fill with foliage.

A lasting display

In favourable conditions it can produce successive flowers through much of the active season. The intensity varies with light and season.

Why you’ll love it: it combines a gentle floral colour with a small, almost sculptural branching framework.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it looks its best and which plants complement it

In your space

Where it looks its best

Near a very bright window, in a stable position where it will not be brushed against. Outdoors, choose warm weather, gradual sun acclimation and protection from prolonged rain.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choose a bright succulent arrangement, but use separate pots: this leafy euphorbia should not automatically follow the watering pattern of a cactus.

Crassula ovata — rounded, fleshy leaves beside the spiny stems.
Haworthiopsis attenuata — a low rosette with white markings, protected from strong midday sun.
Gasteria — broad, fleshy leaves for textural contrast, with drying checked independently.

Care at a glance

Light

Very bright light and gradual acclimation to direct sun. Protect from the most intense exposure during heatwaves.

Water

Let the mix dry noticeably before watering again. Water thoroughly and allow all excess water to drain.

Climate

A warm, ventilated position protected from frost. Reduce water and feeding in low winter light.

Safety

Spines and irritating milky sap. Keep away from children and pets; this plant is not edible.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, drying cycle, climate, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and acclimation

Increase sun exposure gradually, especially when moving a plant from indoors. Insufficient light limits flowering. On a hot terrace, morning sun with midday protection is a gentler option.

Drying before watering again

Check below the surface and assess the pot’s weight. Water once the mix has dried noticeably, avoiding both constantly wet roots and prolonged, exhausting drought. Empty the outer pot after drainage.

Air and winter slowdown

High humidity and regular misting are unnecessary. If growth slows in winter, allow longer drying intervals. Leaf loss can accompany rest or stress; by itself, it does not mean that more water is needed.

Temperature and protection

Keep in a warm room without cold draughts. It is not frost hardy. Before the weather turns cold, move it to a bright, protected position and check shoot tips and leaf axils for insects.

Substrate and repotting

Use a pot with drainage holes and an airy succulent mix that releases excess water quickly. Repot during active growth only when roots fill the pot, moving up slightly in size. Wear gloves and avoid breaking stems.

Feeding and safe pruning

Feed lightly with a complete fertiliser suitable for succulents while the plant is growing, following the label. Stop when growth stops; after repotting into a pre-fertilised mix, wait until its initial nutrition is used up. To control the shape, prune with a clean tool and gloves, protecting skin and eyes from the sap.

Botanical identity Identity & natural origin The accepted name, taxonomic history and natural range of the species

Identity

Euphorbia milii belongs to Euphorbiaceae. It is a semi-succulent shrub with leaves and spiny stems, rather than a cactus.

The ‘Charlotte’ selection

‘Charlotte’ is presented in Queen Genetics’ Queen® Tiara range. It is a cultivated selection distinguished by its pink floral display and green foliage.

The wild ecological reference

Wild Euphorbia milii comes from Madagascar and is associated with dry shrublands. This natural range belongs to the species, not to the origin of the commercial selection.

From natural habitat to care: wild Euphorbia milii of dry shrublands provides the ecological reference. Its fleshy stems and ability to shed leaves help it cope with water shortage. In a pot, this aligns with strong light, an airy mix and drying between waterings, without treating leafy ‘Charlotte’ as a plant that never needs water.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for those curious about what lies behind the plant’s appearance

One ‘flower’, several flowers

A cyathium is a tiny inflorescence: one female flower and reduced male flowers gather inside a shared envelope. The surrounding pink bracts provide most of the visible coloured surface.

The stem holds a reserve

Water storage in fleshy stems coexists with ordinary leaves. Shedding leaves under adverse conditions reduces the surface available for water loss, without making the euphorbia a true cactus.

Spines without areoles

In cacti, areoles are specialised structures that produce spines and often flowers. Euphorbia milii has no areoles: its spiny appearance represents a different evolutionary solution.

Sticky does not mean carnivorous

The sticky flower stalks of Euphorbia milii can trap very small insects. This does not make it carnivorous: trapping alone is not equivalent to digesting an insect and obtaining nutrients from it.

Frequently asked questions

Useful distinctions about flowering, watering and safe handling.

01 Is it a cactus?

No. It is a succulent euphorbia with different anatomy from cacti. Spines alone do not place a plant in the Cactaceae family.

02 Why is it not flowering?

Check light and season first. Bright, warm conditions favour flowering, while insufficient light and excessive nitrogen feeding can limit it.

03 Why are leaves falling?

Cold, drought, a change of position or seasonal slowdown can cause this response. Check moisture and stem firmness before adding water; a soft base with wet soil needs particular attention.

04 Can it stay outside in winter?

It needs protection from frost and cold, wet conditions. A bright position indoors or in a sheltered space is safer than an exposed winter terrace.

05 Are the pink parts petals?

They are bracts: modified leaves around the small cyathia. The visible colour therefore has a different structure from an ordinary flower with large petals.

06 What precautions are needed around children and pets?

Keep it out of reach for chewing or play. Spines can injure and the sap irritates skin and eyes. Following ingestion or eye exposure, seek prompt professional medical or veterinary advice.
