Your legal guarantee rights

What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Australian evergreen shrub · Rutaceae · White star-shaped flowers

Philotheca myoporoides ‘White Star’

A small shrub with a very serious level of elegance 🪴

Family: Rutaceae · Pot diameter: 15 cm · Height: 25–30 cm

White five-petalled flowers
Aromatic evergreen foliage
Sun to partial shade
No stagnant moisture

Philotheca myoporoides ‘White Star’ fills its compact evergreen crown with pink buds that open into clear white stars. The bright flowers stand out against narrow, glossy leaves, while the soft colour of the closed buds adds depth to the white display. When touched, the aromatic foliage adds a quiet sensory detail to this elegant picture, bringing together freshness, dense texture and an almost lace-like flowering display.

Near an entrance or at the edge of a mixed planting, the white flowers draw the eye without competing with surrounding colours. The dense crown provides a lasting green backdrop after flowering, while in a roomy pot it can become the centrepiece of a restrained terrace composition.

What makes it special

White flowers, fragrance and a dense evergreen habit work together.

Buds opening into stars

Pink buds open into small flowers with five white petals, creating a delicate two-colour effect as flowering progresses.

Glossy aromatic foliage

Narrow green leaves clothe the crown through the year and release scent when rubbed.

A naturally compact line

Dense branching creates a full background without frequent clipping.

Why you will love it: it offers star-shaped white flowers and aromatic foliage in a compact evergreen form.

In the garden & on the balconyPlacement & plant combinationsFor bright, sheltered positions with light soil and free drainage.

Planting position

Best position

Provide sun to light partial shade and shelter from severe frost. Avoid positions that remain permanently wet.

In hot inland areas, bright partial shade gives shelter from intense afternoon sun. Position it in the middle of a mixed planting and allow approximately 2 m from centre to centre for separate, fully developed shrubs.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible planting

White stands out beside grey-green foliage, small pink flowers and contrasting crown textures. Choose a sheltered position with freely draining, slightly acidic soil and adjust watering for each plant.

Correa alba — its small grey-green leaves emphasise the slender green foliage of ‘White Star’. It suits sun to light partial shade and excellent drainage.
Coleonema pulchellum — its very fine foliage and small pink flowers provide a gentle colour link. Use it in the sunny part of the composition, in light soil that drains quickly.
Leptospermum scoparium ‘Red Damask’ — double, deep red flowers emphasise the white. Allow more space for its crown towards the back of the composition, in a warm, sheltered position and freely draining soil.

Care at a glance

Light

Sun to light partial shade; shelter from hot afternoon sun during inland heatwaves.

Watering

Water moderately, allowing the upper layer to dry slightly.

Climate & hardiness

Protect from severe frost and cold, drying wind, especially in a pot.

Safety

Keep it as an ornamental plant and away from small children or pets that chew plants.

Detailed careComplete care guideLight, moderate water, free-draining soil and light pruning after flowering.

Light

Provide sun or bright partial shade. In very hot climates, afternoon shade is useful.

Watering

Water when the top layer of soil begins to dry, without letting the whole pot dry out during growth and flowering. In the ground, once established, water less often according to the heat and rainfall.

Soil

Use light, humus-rich, freely draining soil, preferably slightly acidic. Plant at the same depth as before and keep soil and mulch clear of the stem bases. The pot needs open drainage holes.

Feeding

During active growth, feed gently at the rate appropriate to the pot and fertiliser. Do not apply fertiliser to dry soil or when cold weather has stopped growth.

Pruning

Lightly trim long tips after the main flowering display, retaining the naturally rounded crown. Avoid tight clipping once buds have already formed.

Winter

During frost, move the pot to a bright sheltered position and reduce watering.

Development over timeFrom bud clusters to a wave of white starsPink buds open gradually and the green crown remains after flowering.

Establishment

Root growth comes first, supported by consistent but not excessive moisture.

Flowering shoots

Small groups of buds form in the leaf axils and open successively into white flowers.

Mature crown

Over time it forms a dense shrub approximately 2 m tall and wide in the ground. Pot culture and light pruning after flowering keep the plant more restricted.

Mature habit & dimensions

Established plant in the ground

Approximately 2 m tallApproximately 2 m wideDense, branched crown

Numerous side shoots fill the crown with narrow leaves arranged alternately. Small groups of white flowers brighten the branches without completely hiding the green backdrop.

Form through time

Two characteristic views

Pink budsWhite five-petalled flowers

Before the flowers openPink buds form small groups among the leaves.

White flowering displayThe buds open into flat flowers with five white petals.

The two views show successive stages of the same flowering cycle. The evergreen foliage remains as a backdrop, while the main spring display starts earlier or later depending on the climate.

What to expect after planting: gradual thickening of the crown and more flowering sites as the side shoots develop.

History & originCultivar originThe selection White Star and the species names

‘White Star’ is cultivated as a white-flowered selection of the Australian Philotheca myoporoides. Its breeder, original selection date and any specific parental cross are unknown.

The species was formerly known as Eriostemon myoporoides, explaining the continued use of Eriostemon in the nursery trade. This botanical name change concerns the species; it is not a separate breeding history for ‘White Star’.

Greenleaf for Plant NerdsScience nobody asked forBotanical details for anyone curious about what lies behind the plant’s appearance

Scent held within the leaf

Aromatic oils are held in small secretory cavities within the leaf. Rubbing the blade releases their scent; the dots visible against the light correspond to structures inside the tissue rather than an oily surface coating.

Free stamens within the white star

Ten stamens with hairy filaments surround the centre of the flower. In this species they are free from one another; they do not form a single tube at the base, as happens in other members of the wider related group. This detail becomes visible only when the flower is examined closely.

Frequently asked questions

Six practical answers about position, watering and long-term growth.

01Does it lose its leaves in winter?

It is evergreen and retains its green crown in suitable conditions. Protection from severe frost is particularly useful for young plants and pots.

02When does it flower?

The main display is in spring, with pink buds opening into white flowers. In mild conditions it may start earlier or continue towards summer.

03Does it need full sun?

It takes sun to partial shade; in hot inland areas, shelter from afternoon sun is useful.

04Is it suitable for a pot?

Yes, if the mix drains freely and watering remains moderate.

05Why are buds dropping?

Check whether the pot has become excessively dry or, conversely, is holding standing water. During bud development, maintain gentle, consistent moisture and shelter from extreme heat or cold.

06How should it be pruned?

Lightly trim long tips after the main flowering display. Do not clip shoots covered in buds, as this would remove the coming flowers.
