When the foliage is that good, flowering is just a bonus 🌺
Family: Gesneriaceae • Pot diameter: 12 cm • Height: ~20 cm
Episcia cupreata 'Neon Suprise' is one of those plants that looks “collectable” before you even say its name: low, lush growth, a velvety texture, and foliage that catches the light with an almost neon-like glow. It fits perfectly on a shelf, in a plant corner, or on a piece of furniture where you want something compact but seriously eye-catching—almost like a little design object. Over time it spreads via slender stolons (stolons), filling the pot like a soft living carpet, while the flowers—when conditions are right—arrive as a bonus: small tubular blooms in warm tones. It’s the ideal pick when you want texture, colour and personality in a small footprint.
Choose a bright spot with strong indirect light—near a window with a sheer curtain, or anywhere it “sees” light without being hit by direct sun. It thrives on stability: steady temperatures, no cold drafts, and a mix that holds light moisture while still draining well. Because the leaves are velvety, it’s best to water at the base (into the soil) rather than wetting the foliage.
Design goal: texture + colour at low height, like a foliage “carpet”.
Taxonomic notes: Episcia belongs to the Gesneriaceae family (the “African violet family”) and is known for stolon-forming plants with vivid or patterned foliage and tubular flowers. Episcia cupreata is cultivated primarily as a houseplant, valued first and foremost for its decorative leaves.
Native habitat & range: The species is associated with humid tropical regions from Central America to northern Brazil, typically growing in the understory (understory) where light is filtered and humidity is more stable.
Name & etymology: The genus name is linked to the idea of “shade” (shaded habitat), which fits its preference for indirect light. The epithet cupreata points to coppery tones seen in many forms of the species.
Selection, distribution & stability: 'Neon Suprise' is a cultivar selection chosen for a brighter, more “glowing” foliage effect. It is maintained vegetatively (stolons/cuttings) to keep the distinctive look consistent in production.

Bright indirect light. Direct sun—especially midday—can scorch or dull the velvety foliage.
Water at the base when the top of the mix starts to dry slightly. Aim for light, steady moisture with good drainage, and never let water sit in a saucer or cachepot.
Preferably not. Velvety leaves hold droplets and can mark. If you need more humidity, aim for a gentler room environment or group plants together.
Very easily via stolons. Let a “baby” rosette root in the same pot, or cut and root it in a light, free-draining mix.
