Small rosette, red tips and a very determined look 🏮
Family: Crassulaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5cm
Echeveria 'Red Lantern' is a small, highly decorative echeveria with a compact rosette and fleshy leaves that develop red to orange-red tips when the plant is grown in a very bright position. The contrast between the fresh green base and the warm tones along the leaf edges gives it a clean, vivid presence without losing its elegant shape. Thanks to its small size, neat geometry and strong colour accent, it fits beautifully on bright windowsills, shelves, small pots and succulent compositions where low growth, a clean outline and intense but refined colour are needed.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light or in a sheltered outdoor spot with gentle direct sun. Echeveria 'Red Lantern' looks best when it receives enough light to keep a compact rosette and clear red tips, while exposure to strong summer sun should be gradual. In low light, it may become greener and the rosette may open up. The pot needs excellent drainage and the substrate should dry well between waterings.
Composition goal: a bright dry-style planting with low height, clean geometry, colour intensity and plants that share needs for aeration and fast drainage.
Taxonomic history: Echeveria belongs to the family Crassulaceae, a large group of succulents with fleshy leaves, rosette growth and important adaptation to conditions where water storage is essential for plant survival. Echeveria 'Red Lantern' is cultivated for its compact rosette, vivid green leaf base and warm red tones that become more intense in bright light.
Natural group & distribution: The genus Echeveria is mainly associated with sunny, rocky and well-draining regions of the Americas, with especially strong presence in Mexico. This natural background explains the variety’s need for strong light, light substrate, limited watering and good air circulation around the rosette.
Naming: The name 'Red Lantern' refers to the red to orange-red leaf tips, which become more visible when the plant grows in very bright conditions. The name mainly describes the colour effect of the variety, with the red appearing like a bright rim around the rosette.
Selection & spread: The variety is maintained in cultivation by vegetative propagation, so its key traits remain stable: small size, compact growth, fleshy leaves and a tendency to develop red tips under good light conditions. In young plants or softer light, the green tone may be more dominant.
