The plant that lives for sunshine and compliments 😎
Family: Crassulaceae • Pot diameter: 8 cm
Echeveria agavoides 'Mars Galaxy' is one of those succulents that catch the eye from across the room: it forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with broad, fleshy leaves that end in sharp tips, reminiscent of a mini agave. The green–red contrast becomes most intense in strong light or with cooler nights, creating a “galaxy” effect around the edges of the rosette. It is ideal for succulent collectors, for small pots on sunny windowsills and for mini arrangements on a desk or shelf where you want something small in size but big in visual impact.
Ideally in a spot with direct sun for several hours a day or in a very bright window (south or south-west facing). Indoors, place it as close to the glass as possible to keep the rosette compact and the colours intense. Outdoors, choose a sunny, sheltered location where rain does not sit on the rosette for long, to avoid rot in the centre.
Design goal: small, crisp compositions with strong colour and texture contrast, perfect for windowsills, shelves and very bright balconies.
Taxonomic history: Echeveria agavoides belongs to the family Crassulaceae, known for tight, triangular rosettes that resemble small agaves. The genus Echeveria includes dozens of succulent species, much loved by collectors for their range of colours and forms.
Habitat & distribution: In the wild, E. agavoides grows in dry, rocky areas of Mexico, often on slopes with intense sun, poor soils and excellent drainage. From there it entered succulent collections in Europe, Asia and North America.
Selection & improvement: The form sold as 'Mars Galaxy' is a modern cultivar within the E. agavoides group, selected for its intense red margins and clean, symmetrical rosette. Specialist succulent nurseries selected plants with stable colouring under “stress” (strong light and temperature swings).
Propagation & character: It is propagated vegetatively (rosette cuttings or offsets) to keep the clonal traits intact. Thanks to its bold red–green effect and tolerance of heat and drought, it has become a favourite in small succulent collections and sunny windowsill plantings.
| 🔎 Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| 🌿 Botanical name | Echeveria agavoides 'Mars Galaxy' |
| 🪴 Pot / Size | 8 cm pot • small, compact rosette |
| ☀️ Light | Full sun or very bright light, ideally near a bright window. |
| 💧 Watering | Very sparse; water only when the substrate has dried completely. |
| 🌡️ Temperature | Ideally >10°C. Protect from frost and cold, wet conditions. |
| 📏 Final size | Approx. 8–10 cm tall and 10–12 cm across under good conditions. |
| 🎨 Colouring | Green base with vivid red leaf edges, intensified by strong light and cooler nights. |
| 🐾 Toxicity | Non-toxic — suitable for homes with children and pets (though nibbling is still not encouraged). |
It needs very bright light or direct sun for several hours a day, ideally in a south or south-west facing window. In lower light the rosette stretches and colours fade.
Water only when the substrate is completely dry throughout the pot. In spring–summer this can mean every 7–10 days, while in winter it will be even less often, especially in cool indoor conditions.
In mild, warm climates it can stay outside as long as there is no frost and the substrate drains perfectly. In regions with cold, wet winters, it’s better to move it to a bright, sheltered spot.
Give it more sun, keep the substrate very free-draining and avoid very frequent watering. Gentle temperature swings (cooler nights, warm days) also help intensify the red edges.
