Palm therapy for tired corners 🏝️
Family: Arecaceae • Pot diameter: 14 cm • Height: ~60 cm
Elegant, multi-stem indoor palm with fine, arching fronds that soften a room. Loves bright, indirect light, steady light moisture, and good airflow.
Set in a bright spot out of harsh midday sun. Water when the top 2–3 cm of mix are dry; avoid boggy conditions. Prefers an airy, free-draining mix (peat + perlite + bark) and higher ambient humidity. Keep away from heaters/drafts. Prune only fully brown fronds at the base.
Taxonomy: Dypsis lutescens (syn. Chrysalidocarpus lutescens) in the Arecaceae. Known as areca or butterfly palm for its airy, “butterfly-like” fronds.
Native range: Madagascar. Grows in warm, humid forests with organic, well-drained soils.
Morphology & habit: Multi-stem palm with slender, yellow-tinged pseudostems and pinnate, arching fronds. Stays moderate in height indoors.
Cultural needs: Bright indirect light, steady light moisture, higher ambient humidity. Sensitive to salts/fluoride (brown tips).
Ecology: Adds shade and humidity to the microclimate; indoors, contributes to a fresher feel.
Maintenance notes: Feed spring–summer with a balanced fertilizer; avoid overdoing it. Remove only fully brown fronds.
