The variety that said “enough with the reds” 😌
Family: Apocynaceae • Pot size: 15 cm • Height: 45 cm
Mandevilla Diamantina® Opale 'Citrine' is the variety that made yellow feel like a serious statement in the world of dipladenia. Its flowers show a rich, luminous yellow in a trumpet-shaped form, while the bright green foliage provides the clean tropical base needed to make that colour truly stand out. The overall look is fresh, sunlit and unusual compared with the more familiar reds, pinks and whites of the category. For terraces, balconies, pergolas and bright containers, it is one of the strongest choices when you want flowering with energy, long seasonal performance and a clear colour identity.
Place it in a sunny, warm position where it will receive several hours of light through the day and protection from prolonged cold. Opale 'Citrine' performs especially well on terraces, balconies and in courtyards, particularly when it has a light support or a container that allows its habit to read clearly. Like all good dipladenias, it wants warmth, a free-draining mix and a steady watering rhythm without permanently wet roots.
In a composition it works like an injection of light: it adds energy, brightness and an instantly more exotic character.
Taxonomic history: The variety belongs to the mandevilla/dipladenia group, a category loved for its trumpet-shaped flowers, glossy foliage and tropical summer appearance.
Place of origin / habitat logic: Mandevilla have tropical roots, which is why they are closely associated with warm, bright conditions and a long summer flowering season in pots and gardens.
Naming and identity: The Diamantina® Opale series created a more recognisable premium framework for modern dipladenias with improved presentation and strong market identity. The name 'Citrine' clearly refers to the jewel-like bright yellow character of this cultivar.
Selection, breeding and spread: Opale 'Citrine' was introduced as the first truly yellow mandevilla of the series and was recognised as an innovation at IPM in 2011. Since then, it has been considered a landmark cultivar in the category because it effectively opened the way for yellow-flowering dipladenias.
