What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Upright grey-blue evergreen foliage · Asphodelaceae

Dianella ‘Coolvista’®

Like an ornamental grass, but with a better CV😎

Family: Asphodelaceae · Pot diameter: 17cm · Height: 30cm

  • Narrow grey-blue blades
  • Compact upright rosettes
  • Evergreen architectural line
  • Sun to bright partial shade

Dianella ‘Coolvista’® turns grey-blue foliage into clean architecture. Narrow, firm blades rise almost vertically and open only slightly outwards, making the clump look dense without becoming heavy. The colour remains visible throughout the year and gives an entrance, terrace pot or repeated border an immediate contemporary rhythm. Choose it when the scheme needs linear character, a calm metallic-blue tone and lasting visual harmony without relying on a flower display.

At an entrance or repeated along a path, it creates a clean contemporary rhythm; on its own in a pot, it reads like an elegant sculpture made from grey-blue lines. Beside spherical flower heads, deep-purple blooms or silver foliage, its cool tone becomes even more intense. It is a dependable design anchor that keeps the entire composition coherent and polished throughout the year.

What makes it special

Coolvista® combines a distinctive waxy grey-blue colour, a crisp basal structure and international recognition.

Colour with real depth

A wax coating softens the green blade into the cultivar’s cool, almost metallic grey-blue tone.

Compact architecture

Narrow rigid blades organise into upright basal rosettes and diverge only gently as they age.

A recognised selection

Coolvista® received the IPM Novelty award in 2014 for its distinctive habit, resilience and foliage.

Why you will love it: it creates the disciplined line of an ornamental grass with evergreen substance and a particularly refined blue-grey finish.

In the garden & on the balcony Placement & plant combinations Abundant light, fast drainage and protection from severe frost preserve its upright line and cool-toned colour.
Planting position

A clean line in sun or bright partial shade

Use in modern entrances, repeated along paths, in gravel planting, coastal schemes or outdoor pots. Give rapid drainage and shelter from severe frost in colder districts.

Colour & compatibility

Blue-grey with plum, white and silver

Contrasting broad leaves and airy flowers make the narrow vertical rosettes feel sharper.

  • Gaura lindheimeri — small white flowers float above the strict blades
  • Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’ — burgundy foliage deepens the cool blue-grey
  • Helichrysum italicum — a lower silver texture continues the drought-aware palette

Care at a glance

Light

Full sun to bright partial shade, with light afternoon shelter in extreme reflected heat.

Watering

Water regularly until rooted, then deeply when the upper layer dries; never leave the crown in stagnant moisture.

Climate & hardiness

Tolerates heat and light frost but needs protection during severe or prolonged freezing.

Safety

Possible berries are ornamental, not edible; keep them away from children and pets.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, drainage, establishment, summer watering, container growing, feeding, grooming and winter protection

Light & orientation

In a coastal or otherwise mild position it can take full sun. On a very hot balcony with reflected heat, light afternoon shade can help, provided it still receives enough light to maintain its blue tone.

Soil & drainage

Choose moderately fertile soil or growing mix, from acidic to neutral, with excellent drainage. A brief dry spell is less of a risk than constant moisture around the fine roots.

Watering during establishment

During the first few months, water deeply when the surface begins to dry so that moisture reaches the entire root ball. Small daily amounts encourage shallow roots.

Watering once established

Once established it is drought tolerant, but a container still needs checking during prolonged dry summer weather. Water thoroughly and allow it to drain completely.

Growing in a container

Use a stable outdoor pot with clear drainage holes and an aerated growing mix. Move up by one pot size at a time once the roots have filled the available space.

Feeding

One light application of a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring is usually enough. Excess nitrogen can produce softer growth.

Grooming & pruning

It does not need formative pruning. Remove dry or badly damaged leaves individually, low at the base, and avoid cutting straight across the clump.

Winter protection

When temperatures below about −5°C are forecast, move the pot to a bright, sheltered, frost-free place or protect the roots and clump well. Keep the growing mix only just moist in winter.

Development over time From a tight rosette to a mature upright clump The fine roots establish, basal fans multiply, and the grey-blue architecture becomes increasingly defined.

Rooting the rosettes

The current 30cm plant first secures its base and may remain visually still.

Basal multiplication

New upright rosettes fill the centre without losing the narrow outline.

Mature columnar clump

The foliage reaches about 40cm in height and 30–40cm in spread, with occasional fine flower stems above.

Flower and fruit production varies; the defining and dependable display is the upright evergreen foliage.

What to expect after planting: Growth may be quiet at first while the fine roots establish. Over time the basal rosettes multiply and the clump approaches about 40cm in height and 30–40cm in spread. Flowering is sparse and usually appears only on sufficiently mature plants.

History & origin Cultivar origin The Australian breeding story and the journey of ‘Allyn-Citation’

The story of Coolvista® began in a breeding programme at East Gresford, New South Wales. On 20 September 2003, Noel Jupp made a controlled cross between two unnamed selections of Dianella revoluta. By March 2004 one seedling stood out: it was more upright, denser and more compact, with narrower leaves and a distinctive grey-blue tone.

Propagation by division from 10 October 2005 showed that those qualities remained consistent, and the selection was named ‘Allyn-Citation’. Credited to Noel Charles and Virginia Florence Jupp, it reached gardens as Dianella revoluta Coolvista® (‘Allyn-Citation’) and received the IPM Neuheit award in 2014.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Science nobody asked for Botanical details for anyone who wants to know what lies behind the plant’s appearance

The blue is a surface effect

Epicuticular wax scatters light over the chlorophyll and reduces direct water loss.

Fans are built from basal rosettes

Each narrow group of blades arises from the base, so the clump thickens by multiplication rather than woody branching.

Flowering is rare and maturity-dependent

Flower stems are an occasional bonus rather than the main display and generally appear only once the clump has matured. Two equally healthy plants of different ages can therefore show equally strong foliage while only the older one flowers.

Frequently asked questions

Six practical answers about identity, mature size, strong Mediterranean sun, watering, container growing and infrequent flowering.

01How large does it become?

Expect foliage around 40cm high and 30–40cm wide in suitable conditions.

02Will it flower every year?

Not necessarily. Flowering is naturally sparse and usually appears only once the clump has matured; the grey-blue foliage remains the main display.

03Does it stay blue in shade?

Bright partial shade is acceptable, but deep shade usually gives greener, looser growth.

04Can it handle drought?

Once established it tolerates dry spells, although a potted plant still needs a deep drink when the mix dries.

05Can it remain outdoors in frost?

It handles light frost; protect it from severe or prolonged freezing, especially in a pot.

06Does it need cutting back?

No routine hard cut is required. Remove only damaged blades and spent stems at the base.
