Tiny plant with skyscraper energy 🏙️
Family: Crassulaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5 cm
Dwarf clone with minute, triangular leaves stacked into a neat vertical “column”. Edges blush red in sun; perfect for mini mixes & desks.
Very bright spot with 1–4 hours of direct sun (morning is ideal) for compact form/colour. Water deeply, then let the mix dry completely. Use an ultra-draining substrate (cactus mix with pumice/sand). Pot with drainage holes; no standing water. Best at >10–12 °C.
Taxonomy: Genus Crassula (>200 spp.) includes emblematic South-African succulents. ‘Tom Thumb’ is considered a dwarf clone within the Crassula rupestris complex (stacked, triangular leaves forming a columnar habit).
Range & habitat: Southern Africa; dry rocky sites with extreme drainage and seasonal rains. Adapted to full sun with cool nights.
Name: “Crassula” from Lat. crassus (=thick), for the water-storing leaves. ‘Tom Thumb’ = miniature size.
Ecology & physiology: CAM metabolism — stomata open at night to save water. Red/pink margins in strong light/coolth.
Relatives & distinction: Finer scale than Crassula perforata or C. rupestris sensu lato — smaller, denser leaves; more delicate texture.
Propagation & stability: Easy from stem/leaf cuttings; roots fast in a dry, gritty medium. Clonal lines hold traits true.

Very bright spot with a few hours of sun (ideally morning). Low light = stretch and colour loss.
Water thoroughly, then allow a complete dry-down. Even less in winter. Always use drainage holes; never let water sit.
Cactus mix with 30–50% inorganics (pumice/perlite/coarse sand). The more humid the climate, the grittier the mix.
Best kept out of reach: several Crassula species are mildly toxic if chewed by cats/dogs.
