Boomerang plant: forget it and it bounces back prettier 😅
Family: Asparagaceae • Pot diameter: 12 cm • Height: ~30 cm
Classic, forgiving houseplant with arching green leaves and a bold white central stripe. Sends out stolons (“runners”) with baby plantlets for endless propagation.
Place in bright, indirect light; avoid harsh midday sun that can scorch variegation. Water when the top 2–3 cm of mix is dry. Use an airy, free-draining medium (peat + perlite + bark) in a pot with drainage. If tips brown, check water salts/dry air and trim neatly.
Taxonomy: Chlorophytum comosum in Asparagaceae, widely grown indoors; cultivars selected for leaf form/variegation.
Range & habitat: Native to Southern Africa; bright woodland edges, organic, free-draining soils with seasonal rain.
Name: “Chloro” (green) + “phytum” (plant); “comosum” = “tufted.” ‘Vittatum’ refers to the central white vitta (stripe).
Ecology: Forms rhizomes that store water; tolerates short dry spells. Small white flowers on runners that carry pre-formed plantlets.
Look-alikes: Differs from ‘Variegatum’ (white margins) by its central white stripe and stronger contrast.
Propagation: Very easy from runner plantlets or by division; traits remain true clonally.
Notes: Salt-sensitive (brown tips); deep shade reduces stripe definition.
