Chamaelobivia cv. 'Paolina' is a small to medium-growing cactus, known for the impressive relationship between its compact plant body and the large size of its flowers. Its green, cylindrical stems gradually form a denser cluster, with visible ribs, small white areoles and fine spines that cover the surface evenly. Its main decorative feature is the flowering: large, funnel-shaped blooms in vivid pink, magenta to pink-burgundy tones, creating a striking contrast with the green body of the cactus. It is an excellent choice for very bright windowsills, sunny balconies and cactus collections where a plant with clean form, low demands and flowering of high decorative value is desired.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light or in a sheltered outdoor spot with gentle direct sun. Chamaelobivia cv. 'Paolina' needs strong light to keep compact stems and support strong flowering. In low light, it may grow more loosely and flower less. Exposure to strong summer sun should be gradual, especially if the plant has been kept in a more protected environment. The pot must drain extremely well and the substrate should dry well between waterings.
Composition goal: a bright dry-style planting with small size, vivid seasonal flowering, mineral substrate and plants that do not need frequent watering.
Taxonomic history: Chamaelobivia is a commercial and horticultural group of hybrid cacti created from crosses between Chamaecereus and Lobivia, groups that are now taxonomically linked with the wider Echinopsis complex. In practice, the name Chamaelobivia remains very useful in cultivation, because it describes compact hybrid cacti with impressive flowering.
Nursery origin: Chamaelobivia cv. 'Paolina' is not a natural species, but a cultivated hybrid selection. This means that its traits — compact growth, large flowers and vivid colour — come from selected crosses and are maintained in cultivation for their decorative value.
Naming: The abbreviation cv. means cultivar, in other words a cultivated variety. The name 'Paolina' is used to distinguish this specific selection within the Chamaelobivia group, where many hybrids exist with different flower colours and sizes.
Flowering & distribution: Hybrid Chamaelobivia are selected mainly for their strong flowering. In the right light conditions and with a drier winter rest, they can produce flowers that are impressively large in relation to the size of the plant, making the group especially loved in cactus collections.
