Camellia japonica 'Brushfield's Yellow' is an elegant camellia with striking anemone-type blooms: cream-white outer petals framing a full, soft yellow centre. It flowers from late winter into spring, just when the garden is hungry for colour, and keeps glossy, dark green foliage all year round. It is ideal for semi-shaded spots, front doors and pots on terraces where you want something classic yet distinctive, with an English-garden feel and very high ornamental value.

Where to place it

Choose a semi-shaded position with filtered light (morning sun, afternoon shade) and protection from harsh midday sun and drying winds. The soil should be acidic, rich in organic matter and well drained, yet able to hold moisture. In pots, use an ericaceous mix and ensure good drainage. A mulch layer (e.g. pine bark) helps keep moisture stable and protects the shallow root system.

Taxonomic history: Camellia japonica is a classic species of the family Theaceae, naturally occurring in Japan, China and Korea. It became famous in European horticulture from the 18th–19th century as the “Japanese rose”, with hundreds of cultivars in a wide range of flower shapes and colours.

Habitat & distribution: In the wild, camellia species grow in cool, moist woodland environments with acidic, well-drained soils and filtered light. From there, via collectors and nurseries, C. japonica spread to Europe, Australia and the Americas as an ornamental shrub.

Selection & improvement: ‘Brushfield's Yellow’ is a cultivated variety developed in Australia in the 1970s, aiming for a cream-white bloom with a prominent yellow anemone-style centre. Breeder Keith Brushfield selected plants with stable flower form, good flowering performance and an elegant, upright habit suitable both for gardens and containers.

Propagation & recognition: The variety is propagated vegetatively (cuttings, grafting) to maintain its clonal character and has received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society, confirming its reliable performance in temperate gardens.

1) Substrate: Plant in an acidic ericaceous mix rich in organic matter with good drainage. In pots, choose a container slightly wider rather than very deep.

2) Watering: Keep the substrate consistently slightly moist, not soggy. Let the surface dry lightly between waterings.

3) Position & pruning: Place in partial shade with gentle morning sun. Light formative pruning after flowering helps keep it compact and well-shaped.
