Red-tipped new growth that makes you look twice 🚀
Family: Myrtaceae • Pot size: 3 litres • Height: 60–70 cm
Callistemon 'Red Rocket' is an evergreen bottlebrush grown mainly for the strong colour contrast in its new growth: the fresh tips emerge deep red and gradually mature to green, giving the shrub an ongoing sense of movement and freshness. It grows as a neat, tidy shrub that works beautifully for a low hedge or border, while also fitting easily into Mediterranean and more contemporary minimal planting styles. In landscape use it gives structure, rhythm and year-round foliage presence without feeling bulky.
Plant it in sun or light partial shade, in soil that drains well. In full sun the red new growth looks cleaner and more intense, and the shrub usually keeps a tighter outline. If you are using it as a hedge, keep spacing consistent so the line closes evenly.
Role in a composition: a structural framing shrub with coloured new growth — it holds the line and gives rhythm.
Taxonomic background: This plant is commonly sold in horticulture as Callistemon, while Kew currently accepts the species behind Callistemon viminalis under the name Melaleuca viminalis. Both names are still encountered in nursery and garden literature.
Native range and habitat: The accepted species Melaleuca viminalis is native from Queensland to New South Wales in Australia and is associated with subtropical habitats.
Naming and etymology: The name Callistemon comes from Greek roots referring to “beautiful stamens”, while viminalis relates to slender, flexible shoots.
Selection and circulation: 'Red Rocket' is circulated in horticulture as a selected bottlebrush grown mainly for its red new flush and hedge value, rather than for showy bottlebrush flowering.

Yes. With a naturally moderate size and a good response to light trimming, it is a very practical choice for low, compact screening.
Once established, it can manage drier spells and suits tougher outdoor positions well. During establishment it benefits from more consistent watering so it can root in properly.
Use light tip pruning after a growth flush has matured, so the plant stays denser and renews the coloured new foliage more often. Avoid hard pruning in periods of stronger cold.
