Family: Marantaceae • Pot diameter: 14cm • Height: 55cm
Calathea 'Stella' turns every leaf into a small, unique composition: white and light-green brushstrokes move across deeper green, framed by darker outlines and wavy edges. The purple tone on the underside adds a second, more theatrical face that is revealed as the foliage changes angle. With a rich, upright silhouette and striking marbled variegation, it is a collectible indoor plant with a true decorative identity.
Place it in a bright indoor spot with plenty of indirect light, protected from strong direct sun — especially the intense midday light of the Greek summer. At around 55cm tall, it looks beautiful on a low stand or low piece of furniture, but it can also stand on the floor. Keep it away from direct air-conditioning flow, radiators and cold draughts, in a spot with stable temperature and increased humidity.
Taxonomic history: The accepted modern name of the species is Goeppertia lietzei. The older botanical name Calathea lietzei remains a synonym, while the variety is widely sold in the trade as Calathea 'Stella'.
Origin of the variety: 'Stella' was discovered in October 2021 in a commercial nursery in Malaysia, as a natural whole-plant mutation within a crop of Goeppertia lietzei 'Fusion White'. Vegetative propagation and repeated trials confirmed that its distinctive variegation remains stable.
Place/habitat & distribution: The species Goeppertia lietzei is native to eastern Brazil and is associated with humid tropical ecosystems. 'Stella', however, is a cultivated nursery-origin variety and not a wild form.
What sets it apart: Compared with its parent 'Fusion White', 'Stella' is described as having a sturdier leaf blade, more strongly wavy edges, taller and faster growth, and better tolerance of higher light levels — always without exposure to strong direct sun.

No. 'Stella' originated as a natural mutation of 'Fusion White', but it is a separate, stable variety. It has sturdier leaves, more strongly wavy edges, taller and faster growth, and a different expression of variegation.
Brown edges are often linked to low atmospheric humidity, irregular watering, dry air movement or mineral build-up from the water. Check these conditions first and do not automatically increase watering, because permanently wet substrate can damage the roots.
Water when the surface of the substrate begins to dry, before the whole pot dries out. Let excess water drain away and do not allow it to remain inside the decorative pot.
Yes. Calatheas are considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. However, chewing is best avoided, both for the animal’s safety and for the protection of the foliage.
