When compact is very obviously a strength 🌍
Strawberry Tree • Family: Ericaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: 30 cm
Arbutus unedo 'Mercurius' ('Bocarm' PBR) is an exceptionally well-shaped, compact strawberry tree with a rounded habit, smaller narrower leaves and a particularly good performance in pots. It brings structure, evergreen volume and Mediterranean character without becoming bulky, which makes it ideal for patios, balconies, entrances and smaller gardens where you want a clean-edged evergreen shrub with a tidy outline. Its softly white-to-blush autumn flowering and its good tolerance of heat, drought and humidity make it especially useful in Greek conditions.
Choose a position in full sun or with very good natural light, in soil that drains properly and never holds stagnant water. It is excellent for balconies, roof terraces, courtyards and smaller gardens, while its compact rounded habit helps it look organised and elegant even in limited space. In a pot it performs very well, provided it is not left to dry out for long periods in summer.
Role in a composition: the compact evergreen volume that brings structure, cool-season interest and year-round stability.
Botanical background: This variety belongs to Arbutus unedo, the well-known Mediterranean strawberry tree, an evergreen member of the Ericaceae family with a long ornamental tradition thanks to its foliage, flowers and characteristic fruits.
The identity of 'Mercurius': The name refers to the smallest planet in our solar system and points directly to its compact, rounded form. It is a selection with very good branching, narrow leaves and a particularly neat overall appearance.
Selection and introduction: The cultivar is presented by Plantipp under the code 'Bocarm' PBR and is listed there with breeder Wandrille de Thomassin. It has been selected for excellent pot performance, tolerance of heat, drought and humidity, and its naturally rounded growth without heavy intervention.
Character of the variety: After about seven years it remains around 70 cm high and 70 cm wide, flowers from September to November with white blooms touched with pink, and is especially suitable for patios, balconies, small gardens and low evergreen structures.
