Forgot the sinus, remembered every other detail
Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 12 cm · Height: 35 cm
Anthurium forgetii stands apart because its blade closes almost completely at the base, forming an oval velvety surface instead of the familiar open heart seen in many Anthurium. Pale venation organises the deep green without interrupting its clean perimeter.
The form is calm yet botanically unusual, ideal for a collection that values subtle morphological differences. As leaves increase in size, the nearly closed sinus becomes even more striking.
The missing deep heart-shaped notch changes the blade proportions completely and identifies the species without vivid variegation.
Basal lobes meet or come extremely close, producing a nearly continuous oval outline.
A matt surface absorbs hard reflections and gives the leaf quiet depth.
Paler primary and lateral veins chart the blade without overwhelming the green.
Why you will love it: it is a collector Anthurium with impact rooted in clean morphology rather than flashy variegation.
Set it at eye level in a bright cabinet, on a shelf or table with clear space around the blade. An oval or cylindrical planter in matt green, graphite or pale stone repeats its closed outline and keeps the view calm.
Pair it with Anthurium showing a different sinus or with fine-lined aroids so the unusual oval blade reads immediately.
Abundant bright indirect light with protection from strong direct sun.
Water as the upper layer begins to dry, soaking fully and allowing immediate, unrestricted drainage.
Keep at 18–27°C, ideally above 60% humidity, with gentle airflow and no cold draughts.
Not pet-safe. Aroid tissues contain irritating insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.
Provide abundant bright indirect light near a curtained window. Deep shade reduces new-leaf size and pace, while harsh sun can fade or scorch the blades.
Water as the upper layer begins to dry and let water move freely through the entire mix. Roots need moisture together with air, not permanent saturation.
Stable humidity at 60% or more helps large blades open without sticking. Gentle airflow limits condensation and matters just as much as a humidifier.
Keep ideally at 18–27°C, away from cold glass and draughts. Stability matters more than occasional heat, and the risk of damage rises below 16°C.
Use a chunky, highly aerated aroid mix that retains a little moisture. If aerial roots or a climbing stem develop, a moist moss support can guide growth without burying the crown.
During active growth, use Liquid Gold Leaf, a complete NPK feed with calcium and magnesium, at the label rate and on lightly moist mix. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows, and do not combine it indiscriminately with another complete fertilizer.
Anthurium forgetii is an accepted species in Araceae. Its scientific name ends with a double “i” and was published in 1906.
Its native range is documented in Colombia, where the species is associated with the wet tropical biome.
forgetii is the botanical epithet of an accepted species, not a cultivated selection name. Individual plants can still vary naturally in form.
The nearly continuous blade base separates the species readily from many heart-shaped Anthurium with a deep notch.
Without a deep basal split, the surface distributes weight and venation differently. Primary veins act as reinforcement inside one broad continuous blade.
New foliage has a thin flexible epidermis and often a lighter colour. Mechanical strength rises and the velvet appearance stabilises as it matures.
Tiny flowers sit on a spadix and mature in phases. This timing reduces self-pollination and favours pollen movement between inflorescences.
Practical answers about behaviour, common signs and correct care for this plant.
That is one of the defining features of the species. Basal lobes meet or come close enough to close the sinus. It is not deformation or a care deficiency.
Check the upper layer and the pot's weight. Water once the surface has begun to dry but the interior is not bone dry, then let water escape immediately through the drainage holes.
The accepted scientific spelling is Anthurium forgetii, with two final “i” letters. The shorter form appears frequently in trade but is not the standard accepted botanical name.
Less light, a recent repot, unstable humidity or limited root development can temporarily reduce size. Stabilise conditions and judge the trend across two or three consecutive leaves.
Dry air or an abrupt break in watering can make the blade stick inside the cataphyll. Raise humidity consistently and do not pull the leaf by hand, because tender tissue tears easily.
Not for chewing or ingestion. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause oral pain, drooling and difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach and contact a vet or doctor if exposure occurs.
Every order is carefully prepared to ensure your plant arrives upright, stable and safe.
Individual protection
Plants in pots with a capacity of 3L or more are packed in their own box, which keeps the pot firmly in place and reduces the risk of tipping over.
Durable packaging
We use reinforced cardboard designed to protect against pressure and impact during transit.
