Lean, spiny and absolutely not interested in hugs 😏
Agave • Family: Asparagaceae • Pot diameter: 13 cm • Height: 15 cm
Agave salmiana var. ferox is a commanding agave with a thick, sculptural body and broad grey-green leaves that open into a strict, architectural rosette. Its presence is clean, graphic and intensely dynamic, which is why it works so well on patios, in sunny courtyards, in dry-climate plantings and in large pots where you want a plant with immediate visual force. It brings strong character without asking for frequent attention, but it does deserve respect because of its powerful spines.
Give it as much light and sun as possible. It is especially suited to outdoor spaces with excellent drainage, warm patios and spots where water never lingers around the roots. Narrow walkways and places with frequent contact are best avoided, because the spines are very hard and pronounced.
Role in a composition: the sculptural, spiny anchor that brings structure, tension and dry-climate character.
Taxonomic position: The accepted botanical name is Agave salmiana var. ferox. In horticulture it is still often encountered as Agave ferox or Agave salmiana ‘Ferox’, but these refer to the same recognisable plant within the Agave salmiana complex.
Native range: This variety is native to Mexico, from northwestern Oaxaca to eastern Veracruz. It belongs to a Mexican agave lineage adapted to stronger sun, drier conditions and excellent drainage.
Naming: The word ferox means “fierce”, which suits it perfectly. This form is known for its broad leaves and its especially heavily armed outline with hooked marginal spines.
Ornamental identity: Compared with gentler agaves, this form is valued for its heavy, dramatic rosette and powerful silhouette. It is one of those agaves that never really disappears into the background, even when still quite young.

No. It prefers sparse watering and a substrate that dries properly. Excess moisture is a much greater risk than a short dry spell.
Yes, and that is where it looks best. The more light it receives, the tighter and stronger the rosette remains.
Yes. It starts relatively compact, but with time it can become genuinely large and impressive, so it needs real room if planted permanently in the ground.
Preferably not. Its spines are very hard and sharp, and the sap may irritate skin, so it is best placed away from narrow walkways and play areas.
