Asparagaceae
Collectible hybrid
Glaucous foliage
Luminous margins
Slow growth
Agave ‘Blue Glow’ is a living sculpture with near-perfect symmetry. Broad blue-green leaves form a clean compact rosette and carry a fine yellowish band that ends in a red outline, creating the impression of light from within.
Slow, orderly development keeps the silhouette refined and free from the visual clutter of abundant offsets. This sought-after hybrid delivers strong architectural presence even while young and becomes a lasting focal point in a considered collection.
What makes it special
A glaucous surface, luminous marginal line and red terminal spine create a rosette of exceptional precision.
An edge that glows
A fine yellow band and red margin catch side light and create the distinctive “glow” behind the name.
Symmetry without clutter
Leaves follow a dense spiral and form one clean rosette with little tendency to produce uncontrolled offsets.
A blue-grey sculptural surface
Natural wax softens the green and gives the foliage its cool metallic cast.
Why you will love it: it combines precision, rare colour detail and slow development in an agave with genuine collector appeal.

In your space
Where it looks its best
Give it room to read as a standalone sculpture in a bright entrance, sunny sill or sheltered terrace. Low cachepots in matte white, charcoal or natural stone set off the margins.
Plant pairings
Plants that complement it
Combine it with compact species sharing its light and drainage requirements, keeping every plant in its own pot.
Agave victoriae-reginae — white lines on dark leaves create related geometry in a different palette.
Echeveria lilacina — a soft powdery rosette continues the cool tones in a gentler form.
Ferocactus glaucescens — a glaucous barrel repeats the blue colour and adds ribbed contrast.
Care at a glance
Light
Very bright light with direct sun, introduced progressively for clean colour and compact growth.
Water
Water deeply only after complete drying; much less during cool, slow conditions.
Climate
Excellent airflow, protection from persistent winter damp and from hard frost.
Pets
The terminal spine and irritating sap require a position away from children, pets and frequent contact.
Detailed careComplete care guideLight, drying cycle, climate, substrate and nutrition in detail
Light and position
Abundant light keeps leaves short, colour intensely glaucous and the red margin defined. Increase direct sun gradually, particularly after winter.
Watering correctly
Water thoroughly and allow every trace of surplus to leave. Repeat once the mix is dry throughout and the pot feels noticeably light.
Air and humidity
Do not let water remain in the centre of the rosette, especially in cool weather. Air movement helps leaves and neck dry rapidly.
Temperature and seasonal rhythm
Growth is slow during the warm period and slows further as light and temperature decline. Protect it from prolonged frost and cold saturated mix.
Substrate
Use a very coarse mix rich in pumice, lava or grit. Keep the base of the rosette exactly above the surface.
Feeding and repotting
A dilute balanced fertiliser low in nitrogen every five to six weeks is enough only while new leaves form. Repot in spring without unnecessary root disturbance.

A documented garden hybrid
Agave ‘Blue Glow’ is a cultivated hybrid rather than a wild species. It is attributed to a cross between broad, spineless Agave attenuata and narrow-leaved Agave ocahui.
Breeder and nursery
The selection was created by hybridiser Kelly Griffin at Rancho Soledad Nurseries in California. Its commercial identity rests on a compact solitary rosette, glaucous foliage and coloured margins.
Traits inherited from its parents
A. attenuata is associated with a broader graceful leaf line, while A. ocahui contributes stricter geometry and strong marginal definition. As a cultivar, its origin is entirely horticultural.
From natural habitat to home care: thick tissues store water, surface wax limits loss and the compact spiral organises leaves around a protected growth centre. In a pot it requires abundant light, complete drying and unrestricted airflow.

Blue is an optical effect of wax
Microscopic epicuticular wax scatters light and makes the green surface appear glaucous. Rubbing can leave a permanent mark.
Coloured margins contain pigments
The red line is often intensified by anthocyanins under strong light and cool nights, while the yellowish band remains fine and stable.
It is monocarpic
Like agaves generally, the main rosette flowers once at maturity and completes its cycle after producing a large flowering stem.
It makes few offsets
‘Blue Glow’ is known for a relatively solitary habit. This helps preserve its clean symmetrical silhouette.
Frequently asked questions
Useful answers about placement, watering, seasonal behaviour and the plant’s distinctive traits.
01What are the parents of ‘Blue Glow’?
Established nursery documentation attributes it to Agave attenuata × Agave ocahui, bred by Kelly Griffin in California.
02Is it a collectible agave?
Yes. Slow growth, geometric form and its characteristic three-colour margin have made it especially sought after.
03How much sun does it need?
A very bright position with direct light, introduced gradually. Correct exposure strengthens the margin without scorching the epidermis.
04When should it be watered?
Only after the entire mix has dried. Deep, infrequent watering is safer than frequent small amounts.
05Does it produce many offsets?
It generally remains relatively solitary and makes few offsets, a trait that preserves its symmetry.
06What fertiliser does it need?
Minimal dilute feeding, low in nitrogen, only during clear new-leaf production. Excess opens and softens the rosette.

Care & Tips
We take care of the packaging!
With specially designed boxes, we ensure that the plants will reach you intact, no matter what they encounter on the way!
All plants in 3L pots or larger are placed in individual boxes that secure the plant at the base of the pot, preventing it from tipping over.
The cardboard used for the boxes is specially made to provide resistance to potential impacts during transport.
