Stands tall, blooms cleanly and does not ask for much ☀️
Family: Amaryllidaceae • Pot diameter: 19 cm • Height: 70 cm
Agapanthus 'Crystal Blue' is an evergreen African lily with elegant upright flowering and pale blue blooms with a delicate striped effect, ideal for bright pots, patios and borders with a clean architectural line. The dense, strap-like foliage creates a full base, while the tall flower stems lift the rounded flower heads above the leaves in a very balanced way. It is an excellent choice for Mediterranean and contemporary plantings, combining a long summer presence, low care demands and a cool-toned colour that stays refined even in strongly sunny positions.
Place it in full sun, in well-drained soil and in a position that does not hold excessive winter moisture. In a pot, it needs a quality, airy growing mix and good drainage holes, so the fleshy roots remain healthy. Position it where the flower stems can be seen clearly, such as in front of lower plants, along pathway edges, on patios or in sunny borders.
Taxonomic history: The genus Agapanthus belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae and includes perennial plants with fleshy roots, strap-like leaves and characteristic rounded flower heads. The name comes from the Greek words for “love” and “flower”, which is why Agapanthus is widely known as the “flower of love”.
Native background of the genus: The genus is native to southern Africa, where Agapanthus grows in open, bright positions with seasonal moisture and good drainage. This background explains its preference for sun, well-drained soil and positions that do not remain heavy or wet for long periods.
Selection & morphology: 'Crystal Blue' is a cultivated evergreen selection with dense foliage, a full base and pale blue flowers with a delicate striped effect. Its ornamental value lies in the clean colour performance and the balance between the well-filled foliage and the upright flowering stems.
Spread & decorative value: It is mainly used in pots, patios, borders and sunny plantings where architectural structure is needed without a heavy visual effect. The pale blue tone works especially well in Mediterranean plantings, next to silver foliage, ornamental grasses and lower flowering perennials.
