Variety origin click to read
Agapanthus BlackJack ('DWAghyb02' PBR) is the result of a long-term breeding programme by Andy de Wet and the De Wet Plant Breeders team in South Africa. The programme focused on crosses between species and lines of the genus Agapanthus, aiming to combine aesthetic originality, exceptionally deep colour and reliable garden performance.
Every year, a large number of seedlings from selected parents were evaluated, with particular emphasis on flower colour depth, inflorescence symmetry, flowering frequency, form stability and overall resilience in dry, warm conditions.
‘BlackJack’ stood out for its almost black colour palette, very dark buds, impressive inflorescence symmetry and its ability to produce rich, spectacular flowering. The clone was protected as a plant variety with protection number EU 20222869.
The commercial management and protection of propagation rights is handled by Plantipp B.V., which specialises in the international introduction of new ornamental varieties. The variety quickly became known thanks to the rare intensity of its colour and its award-winning presence at international exhibitions.
