Golden-green foliage, soft form and flowering that is in no hurry to finish ✨
Family: Caprifoliaceae • Pot diameter: 19cm (3L) • Height: 30cm
Abelia × grandiflora 'Gold Spot' is an elegant, bright abelia with small glossy leaves in green and golden-yellow tones that keep the plant decorative even when it is not in flower. Its gently arching, shrubby growth brings a softer, more natural look to pots, borders and low plantings, while from summer into autumn it produces tubular, soft white-pink and subtly fragrant flowers. It is one of those shrubs that works easily in a space: it brings colour through the foliage, movement through its shape and long seasonal presence without looking heavy or rigid.
Place it in a sunny or very bright position for better flowering and clearer foliage colour. It also accepts light partial shade, especially in warmer areas, as long as it is not kept in deep shade. It prefers fertile, well-draining substrate and is ideal for terraces, entrances, low borders and sheltered garden corners where a shrub with gentle volume and long seasonal duration is needed.
Composition goal: bright foliage in the front, soft form in the middle layer and long flowering without making the whole planting feel heavy.
Taxonomic background: Abelia × grandiflora belongs to the family Caprifoliaceae and is a well-known ornamental hybrid established in international garden design for its easy adaptation, elegant architectural form and unusually long flowering period.
Parentage: The Abelia × grandiflora group originates from an interspecific cross between Asian species, with key contribution from Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora. From this hybrid background, many garden selections have emerged with differences in size, foliage and colour.
Selection of 'Gold Spot': This cultivar stands out mainly for the variegation of its foliage, where green is broken by golden-yellow spots and light-coloured zones. This helps it keep high ornamental value even outside peak flowering, making it especially useful in small gardens and pots.
Spread & use: Like most abelia cultivars, it is propagated vegetatively so the foliage and growth-habit traits remain stable. It is widely used in urban and private plantings where coloured foliage, low maintenance and long seasonal duration are desired.
