Golden-green foliage, an airy habit and flowering that takes its time to leave ✨
Family: Caprifoliaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: 20 cm
Abelia × grandiflora 'Gold Spot' is an elegant, bright abelia with small glossy leaves in green and golden-yellow tones that keep the plant decorative even when it is not in flower. Its slightly arching shrubby growth gives a softer, more natural look in pots, borders and low plantings, while from summer into autumn it produces tubular flowers in soft white to pale pink with a light fragrance. It is one of those shrubs that works easily in a space: colour in the foliage, movement in the shape and long seasonal presence without ever feeling heavy or rigid.
Place it in a sunny or very bright position to encourage better flowering and cleaner foliage colour. It also accepts light partial shade, especially in hotter regions, as long as it is not left in deep shade. It prefers fertile, well-drained substrate and is ideal for patios, entrances, low borders and sheltered garden corners where you need a shrub with gentle volume and long seasonal value.
Composition goal: bright foliage in the foreground, an airy middle layer and long flowering without weighing the planting down.
Taxonomic history: Abelia × grandiflora belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family and is a well-known ornamental hybrid long established in horticulture for its adaptability, elegant habit and unusually extended flowering season.
Parentage: The Abelia × grandiflora group comes from hybrid parentage of Asian origin, principally involving Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora. From this hybrid base, many horticultural selections were developed with differences in size, foliage and colour.
The 'Gold Spot' selection: This particular cultivar stands out mainly for the variegation in its foliage, where green is broken by golden-yellow splashes and lighter zones. That makes it highly decorative even outside peak flowering, which is especially useful in small gardens and containers.
Propagation and use: Like most abelia cultivars, it is propagated vegetatively so that the foliage pattern and growth habit remain stable. It is widely used in urban and private plantings where coloured foliage, low fuss and long seasonal value are all needed at once.
