Abelia • Family: Caprifoliaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: 20 cm
Abelia chinensis 'Variegata' is an elegant, light-catching abelia with variegated foliage in green and soft creamy tones, a fine shrubby structure and a very polished presence in pots or low plantings. Although still small in size, it brings immediate character to a composition by combining leaf colour, gently arching stems and fragrant flowering that stays refined rather than loud. From summer onward it produces small white flowers flushed with soft pink, while the rosy sepals that remain after flowering keep the plant decorative for a long time. It is one of those plants that looks carefully composed without ever seeming overworked, bringing a brighter, more finished feel even to a small space.
Place it in a sunny, sheltered position where it receives enough light to keep the variegated foliage crisp and the flowering reliable. In very hot regions it can benefit from a little afternoon protection, as long as the overall brightness remains high. It works especially well near entrances, seating areas and patios, where its fragrance and fine structure are more noticeable and more useful in the composition.
It works beautifully as a bright mid-layer: softening a composition, breaking up very dark surfaces and bringing fragrance close to the viewing point.
Taxonomic background: This cultivar belongs to Abelia chinensis, a deciduous shrub in the Caprifoliaceae family, known for its fragrant flowers and its importance in the horticultural history of abelias.
