What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Evergreen fringe-flowered shrub · Hamamelidaceae · low, broad and dense

Loropetalum chinense ‘Pgaplugor’ Plum Gorgeous®

Family: Hamamelidaceae · Pot: 15 cm · Height: approx. 25 cm

  • Deep plum foliage
  • Pink fringe flowers
  • Evergreen
  • Australian selection

Loropetalum chinense ‘Pgaplugor’ Plum Gorgeous® brings the depth of rich plum fabric to the garden. Its small leaves follow soft, arching lines and, when the vivid pink flowers appear, seem dressed with fine ribbons. The contrast is striking yet gentle: dark foliage draws the planting together while flowers add light and movement. Even between flowering flushes, it remains an attractive presence that gives your own green corner a distinctive character.

Its broad crown and arching stems soften the formal lines of an entrance or low wall. White flowers and fresh green leaves gain impact against it, while a small group creates continuity between different parts of the garden. In a pot, the natural curve of its branches brings movement and an easy, informal outline.

What makes it distinctive

Plum Gorgeous® is distinguished by broad plum mass and two further characters specific to this exact selection.

Broad plum mass

Growth spreads more than it rises, creating a low dramatic visual weight.

Fringe contrast

Four narrow strap-like petals per flower form bright pink clouds over purple.

Four-season colour

Evergreen foliage keeps the design active even when no flower is open.

Why you will love it: it is a complete colour scheme by itself: plum ground, burgundy youth and pink explosion without seasonal replanting.

Planting position

Best position

Use in the front or middle layer of a sunny border or as a low broad feature in a large pot, allowing up to 2 m of horizontal room for the natural spread to read.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible planting

Pair with Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’, Euphorbia characias and Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ to contrast silver line, lime flowers and vertical purple spikes.

  • Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’ — adds linear texture and movement without hiding the plant’s characteristic mature outline.
  • Euphorbia characias — extends the composition with a different flowering season and compatible light, position and soil moisture.
  • Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ — extends the composition with a different flowering season and compatible light, position and soil moisture.

Care at a glance

Light

Sun to bright partial shade. Gentle sun strengthens purple foliage, while shelter from extreme afternoon heat prevents dry margins.

Water

Maintain even moisture while establishing and water deeply as the surface dries. Once established it tolerates short dry intervals, not permanent saturation.

Climate & hardiness

It tolerates moderate winter cold, although freezing wind can mark young leaves. In a marginal area choose a sheltered wall and keep roots freely drained.

Safety

Not intended for consumption. Keep prunings and flowers away from children or animals that chew plants.

Soil & drainage

Use humus-rich, freely drained, slightly acid to neutral soil. Excess alkalinity causes chlorosis and weakens dark foliage colour.

Feeding

Apply compost and a light ericaceous feed in spring. Excess nitrogen produces soft green growth at the expense of colour and flowering.

Pruning

Thin and shape immediately after the main spring flush. Light pinching densifies the crown, whereas constant clipping removes flowering wood.

Winter

It remains in leaf. Protect a young pot from prolonged frost, avoid overwatering during dormancy and wait until spring before removing marked tips.

Development over timeFrom young plant to mature presenceEstablishment, specific architecture and the plant's real mature garden volume.

Initial establishment

The first flush fills gaps between primary branches and begins to define the outline. Restrained feeding and deep establishment watering produce mature, well-coloured wood rather than weak green tips.

Building its form

The young plant begins dense and relatively upright. With maturity, outer shoots arch and extend further, forming a broad plum dome with older woody structure hidden inside.

Mature expression

At maturity it becomes a broad multi-stemmed evergreen shrub about 1–1.5 m high and 1.5–2 m wide, with arching limbs and a loose natural outline.

Plum foliage gives continuity to the crown. The main spring display may be followed by further flowers in autumn, depending on conditions.

History & originCultivar originAn Australian selection from Plant Growers Australia, combining plum foliage with a gently arching crown.

The story of Plum Gorgeous® begins in Australia with the team at Plant Growers Australia. This selection combined deep plum foliage with a broad crown and gently outward-arching branches. Bright fringe flowers added the contrast that became its signature.

Under the cultivar name ‘Pgaplugor’, Plum Gorgeous® also entered European production through nurseries such as Pépinières Minier. There it is described at around one metre tall and one and a half metres wide after ten years. Its journey from the Australian team to European gardens keeps that distinctive combination of colour and natural curves at its heart.

Anthocyanin and chlorophyll together

Purple leaves are not devoid of chlorophyll. A superficial anthocyanin layer filters light above functional chloroplasts, so photosynthesis continues while the leaf appears plum-coloured.

Four strap-like petals

Each flower of Loropetalum chinense has four very narrow, strap-like petals. Several flowers gather at the end of a short shoot, so a single pink tuft contains many more than four ribbons.

Frequently asked questions

Six precise answers for Plum Gorgeous®, from its present scale to mature behaviour.

01What does the present size of Plum Gorgeous® mean?

The listed approx. 25 cm is its height on arrival. Long-term placement must allow for a mature scale of 1–1.5 m high by 1.5–2 m wide rather than today's young outline.

02Where will Plum Gorgeous® perform best?

Use in the front or middle layer of a sunny border or as a low broad feature in a large pot, allowing up to 2 m of horizontal room for the natural spread to read.

03How do I know when Plum Gorgeous® needs water?

Maintain even moisture while establishing and water deeply as the surface dries. Once established it tolerates short dry intervals, not permanent saturation.

04When should I prune Plum Gorgeous®?

Thin and shape immediately after the main spring flush. Light pinching densifies the crown, whereas constant clipping removes flowering wood.

05Why do new leaves emerge redder?

Young tissue shows a higher visible ratio of anthocyanin to chlorophyll. As leaves mature, chlorophyll increases and colour deepens towards plum.

06Will it remain purple in shade?

Deep shade usually makes it greener and looser. It needs sufficient gentle light for pigment, but not abrupt fierce sun without acclimatisation.
