What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Tropical perennial · Marantaceae · Painted moving foliage

Maranta leuconeura var. kerchoveana

Dense foliage, a clean pattern and a consistent aesthetic 🌿

Family: Marantaceae · Pot diameter: 12 cm · Height: 30 cm

  • Distinctive dark markings
  • Soft oval blades
  • Bright green pattern
  • Moving foliage
  • Low graphic crown

Maranta leuconeura var. kerchoveana draws two rows of dark markings across every soft oval blade, like carefully placed tracks on a bright green canvas. Fine venation and shifting green zones add depth without loud colour, while the low rich crown fills a shelf, desk or bedside table beautifully. It is a distinctive yet versatile Maranta that makes a room feel livelier, calmer and more considered.

The crown does not remain static: blades change angle between day and night, revealing new overlaps and a different rhythm in the pattern. Against pale timber it feels natural and calm; against charcoal or deep green, dark markings become more graphic and the bright centre appears clearer.

What makes it special

Oval blades, two rows of dark marks and daily movement create a low crown full of graphic rhythm.

Form

Broad elliptical blades rise on fine petioles from a rhizomatous base and spread low outwards.

Colour

Mid to bright green is crossed by a paler central zone and two orderly rows of brown-green markings.

Texture

The fine softly matte surface diffuses light and strengthens the calm painted quality of the pattern.

Why you’ll love it: it resembles a handmade repeating pattern whose composition changes through the day as the blades move.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it looks its best and which plants complement it
In your space

Where it looks its best

In a bright position with filtered light, away from radiators and draughts, so both the painted upper surface and pink-burgundy leaf backs can be appreciated.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.

  • Fittonia albivenis — low netted foliage at a smaller scale.
  • Phlebodium aureum ‘Blue Star’ — matte blue-green lobes without a repeated pattern.
  • Peperomia obtusifolia — glossy rounded leaves in a compact mass.

Care at a glance

Light

Plentiful bright filtered light without harsh direct sun.

Water

Maintain gentle even moisture and water as the surface begins to dry.

Atmosphere

Higher humidity, gentle airflow and roughly 18–27°C, without cold draughts.

Pets

Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, but it is not food.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and nutrition in detail

Filtered light

Provide a bright position with diffused light. Harsh sun fades the pattern and scorches thin blades, while deep shade reduces contrast.

Steady gentle moisture

Check the surface and the pot's weight. Water evenly as drying begins and allow excess to drain away.

Humidity with airflow

Combine higher humidity with gentle airflow. Very dry air stresses the edges, while stagnant moisture encourages spotting.

A warm stable setting

Maintain roughly 18–27°C and distance from air conditioning, radiators and cold glass. Abrupt changes quickly affect the foliage.

Calathea mix

Use the specialised Calathea mix, balancing even moisture with aeration. Repot one size up only when roots fill the pot.

Gentle feeding

During active growth use Liquid Gold Leaf according to the label and on already moist mix. Reduce when growth slows.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The species’ range and the history of the cultivated selection

Natural range

Maranta leuconeura is an accepted species native to central and eastern Brazil.

Habitat

It grows as a low rhizomatous plant in wet tropical forest, beneath taller vegetation and in diffused light.

Botanical identity

The name var. kerchoveana remains established in cultivation and with the RHS, while Kew’s current taxonomy includes it within the broader M. leuconeura.

From natural habitat to care: Life in the lower tropical forest explains the preference for filtered light, gentle steady moisture, warmth and protection from dry draughts.

Blades move through nyctinasty

A specialised swollen joint at the blade base changes cellular pressure and alters its angle.

The pattern follows tissue development

Differences in chlorophyll and other pigments organise into zones as the blade unfolds and remain visible at maturity.

Rhizomes renew the crown

Underground or surface stems store reserves and produce new petioles, allowing the clump to thicken.

Marantaceae has complex flowers

The specialised construction of floral organs supports a rapid movement mechanism that assists pollen transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.

01 Why do the leaves rise at night?

This movement is normal nyctinasty in the Marantaceae family. The blade changes angle through a joint at its base and this is not in itself a sign of trouble.

02 Why are the edges turning brown?

Check dry air, mineral-rich water, irregular watering and harsh sun. Correct the cause and trim only tissue that is completely dry.

03 Why do the leaves rise at night?

It is normal nyctinastic movement that changes the blade angle between day and night.

04 What does one yellow leaf mean?

One old lower leaf may age normally. Several at once call for checks of moisture, drainage, temperature and roots.

05 When does it need repotting?

When roots have genuinely filled the pot or the mix has lost its structure. Move up one size only.

06 Is it safe for pets?

Goeppertia species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Persistent chewing of any plant material should still be discouraged.
