Epipremnum ‘Global Green’

Layered green on green. Totally pulled it off 🎨

Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 12 cm · Approximate height: 20 cm

  • Araceae
  • Evergreen foliage
  • Bright indirect light
  • Trailing growth
  • Green-on-green pattern

Epipremnum ‘Global Green’ reveals how interesting green can become when it comes in several shades. Its glossy leaves combine deeper margins with lighter, yellow-green areas towards the centre, creating a quiet mosaic that changes from leaf to leaf.

Flexible stems gradually carry this little collection of greens outwards, giving the silhouette movement and a natural ease. The pattern has enough contrast to stand out while remaining subtle beside wood, ceramics and other plants: a pothos with detail worth a second look.

What makes it special

Its appeal lies in the shifting shades and the way the stems unfold.

Two-tone green

Lighter central areas contrast with deeper green; some leaves also show cream accents.

Glossy leaves

Smooth surfaces catch the light and reveal the differences between shades.

A moving silhouette

Stems can trail or be guided onto a support, creating different displays from the same plant.

Why you will love it: it brings a rich green palette with a different pattern on every leaf.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where to place it and how to combine it
In your space

Where it looks its best

On a bright shelf near a window with room for the stems, or on a plant stand with climbing support. Avoid strong midday sun and attractive but dark corners.

Plant pairings

Plants to pair it with

Three contrasting textures for bright indirect light, each in a separate pot with its own watering.

  • Philodendron hederaceum — calm, heart-shaped foliage beside the green marbling.
  • Peperomia obtusifolia — rounder, substantial leaves contrasting with slender stems.
  • Aglaonema — upright, denser growth balancing the trailing outline.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright indirect light supports a clear pattern and balanced growth.

Water

Let the upper layer dry. Water thoroughly and empty any excess water.

Atmosphere

A stable, warm position away from cold draughts and direct heating.

Pets

Not suitable for chewing. Keep leaves and trailing stems out of reach.

Growing medium & nutrition

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, water, climate, growing medium and feeding

Light and colour

Provide plenty of filtered light. Tolerating shade does not make a dark position ideal for dense growth and distinct variegation.

Check before watering

Check moisture first and avoid keeping the roots permanently wet. When the upper layer has dried, water evenly and allow the pot to drain.

Air and leaves

Avoid dry air blowing directly from heaters or air conditioning. Remove dust with a soft damp cloth, supporting each leaf.

Seasonal changes

As light decreases and growth slows, the mix dries more slowly. Adjust watering to actual moisture rather than keeping a summer schedule.

Growing medium and pot

Use an airy aroid mix that retains some moisture while draining well, in a pot with drainage holes. Avoid putting a small root system in an oversized pot.

Feeding and shape

Feed only during active growth, using a foliage-plant fertiliser according to its label. Gentle tip pruning encourages branching; use gloves and a clean tool.

Botanical identity Identity & natural origin Genus, cultivated selection and wild relatives

Botanical identity

‘Global Green’ is a cultivated variety of Epipremnum aureum, in the Araceae family.

A selection from Japan

Hiroaki Asaoka discovered the natural variation that produced this cultivar in 2016 at a nursery in Aichi, Japan.

Wild relatives

Epipremnum aureum is native to Mo’orea in the Society Islands. This is the species’ natural origin, rather than the birthplace of ‘Global Green’.

Roots that climb

Aerial roots develop at nodes and help the stem attach to surfaces.

Different leaves at different ages

The species has distinct juvenile and mature leaf forms. Plants in small pots usually retain juvenile foliage.

The node matters

A stem section with a node contains the point from which new growth can develop. A detached leaf is not an equivalent cutting.

Flowers we rarely see

In aroids, tiny flowers cluster on a spadix beside a spathe. Flowering is rare in household pothos plants.

Frequently asked questions

Answers about its green pattern and everyday care.

01 Does every leaf have the same pattern?

No. Green shades and lighter, sometimes cream areas are distributed differently from leaf to leaf.

02 Should it trail or climb?

Both are suitable. A support gives aerial roots a surface, while trailing displays the flexible stems.

03 Why are leaves yellowing?

Check moisture and drainage first. Persistent wetness is one possible cause; an old leaf may also be ageing naturally.

04 Does it need weekly watering?

There is no fixed interval. Temperature, light and the growing mix affect drying speed.

05 Can I keep it bushier?

Yes, with good light and gentle tip pruning during active growth. Do not remove healthy leaves simply because their markings differ.

06 Is it safe for pets?

Eating it can cause irritation. Position it so animals cannot reach the long stems either.
