What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Family: Poaceae · Pot diameter: 16 cm · Height: approx. 20 cm

  • Poaceae
  • Young grass
  • Bright position
  • Gentle, even moisture
  • Short-term use

Cat Grass brings a small, lively tuft of green into a cat’s everyday surroundings. Slender Hordeum blades stand closely together, with light movement and the simple appeal of fresh grass.

It is a young cereal crop for cats that enjoy nibbling tender foliage. Its value lies in this fresh, short-lived stage rather than a permanent decorative display that stays the same for years.

What makes it special

A practical green corner with a clear purpose and straightforward daily monitoring.

Fine green texture

Narrow blades form a dense, visually soft tuft, quite different from the broad leaves of familiar houseplants.

An established young crop

Supplied already growing in a pot. There is no need to wait for seeds to germinate before green foliage appears.

A short period of use

Grass renews itself while growing, but nibbling and natural ageing limit the tuft’s lifespan. Replace it once exhausted.

Why you will love it: it gives your cat a dedicated patch of young grass in a convenient pot.

In your space Placement and your cat’s space A dedicated, accessible and safe corner
In your space

Where to place it

In a bright, stable position that the cat can reach easily, away from radiators and hot glass. A heavier outer pot helps prevent tipping, provided it does not retain water.

Safe placement

A separate corner for the cat

Keep it in its own pot, away from ornamental plants that must not be chewed. Any neighbouring plants also need to be suitable for the cat’s access.

  • A separate pot — no mixing with ornamental plants or decorative gravel.
  • A stable base — somewhere it cannot fall during nibbling.
  • Fresh foliage only — remove dead blades, mould and any seed heads.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright natural light. Protect it from intense heat behind glass.

Watering

Keep the mix lightly moist without standing water. Check daily.

Atmosphere

An ordinary, ventilated room environment, away from heat sources.

Cats

Intended for nibbling the young grass. Do not let it develop seed heads with sharp awns.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and position

Choose a bright window without overheating. A very dark position produces weak, elongated blades. Rotate the pot if it leans to one side.

Gentle, even moisture

Water when the surface starts drying, without allowing the entire root ball to become dry. Empty the saucer or outer pot after drainage.

Ventilation and cleanliness

Remove yellowing or fallen blades. Do not keep the dense base constantly wet, and do not mist the foliage to increase humidity.

Temperature

Mild room temperatures are a practical choice for this young crop. Avoid radiators, frost and intense midday heat, which quickly dry or stress the pot.

Mix and repotting

Use it in its existing pot with good drainage. It does not need a large container for its short period of use as cat grass.

Replacement rather than feeding

We do not recommend additional fertiliser or sprays on the young tuft the cat will chew. If foliage becomes exhausted, widely yellowed or mouldy, remove and replace the pot.

Botanical identity Botanical identity and origin The species and cultivated selection

The genus Hordeum

Hordeum belongs to Poaceae, the grass family. This family also includes the cereals cultivated for their grain.

What Cat Grass means

Cat Grass describes the use of young grasses offered to cats, rather than one particular cultivar. This product is young Hordeum.

Grown for foliage

The plant is supplied at its young leafy stage. The purpose is not grain production or ripening seed heads, but use of the tender grass.

Blade and sheath

A grass leaf has a flat blade and a base, the sheath, that wraps around the stem. This differs from the conspicuous leaf stalk of many tropical plants.

Growth from lower down

Growth zones in young grasses sit low down. Removing part of a blade may therefore be followed by renewed growth, without guaranteeing unlimited regeneration in a little pot.

Parallel lines

Veins run mainly along the narrow blade. This is characteristic of grass leaves, unlike the netted pattern of many broad-leaved plants.

Cat Grass and catnip are different

Catnip is Nepeta cataria, a member of Lamiaceae. Cat Grass consists of grasses and is botanically distinct from catnip.

Frequently asked questions

What to expect from cat grass and when to replace it.

01 How long will it last?

There is no fixed lifespan: nibbling, light, temperature and moisture all matter. This is a crop for short-term use, rather than a permanent houseplant.

02 Will my cat definitely eat it?

No. Preferences vary. Offer it somewhere accessible and let the cat choose without encouragement or pressure.

03 Is it the same as catnip?

No. This product is young Hordeum, whereas catnip is the aromatic Nepeta cataria, from a different plant family.

04 What should I do if mould appears?

Remove the pot from the cat and replace it. For the next tuft, check that water does not stand in the container and the position is ventilated.

05 Can I let it develop seed heads?

Not while it is available to the cat. Mature seed heads and sharp awns are not the tender grass for which this product is intended.

06 Does it replace food or treat hairballs?

No. It is optional plant material for cats that nibble grass, not a complete food or a treatment. Repeated vomiting or difficulty swallowing needs veterinary assessment.
