Official HibisQs logo

Hibiscus × rosa-sinensis ‘Adonicus White’ HibisQs® turns white into pure tropical drama. Large luminous petals frame a deep red eye like a graphic focal point above the glossy green crown. Dense branching fills the plant with buds at different stages, allowing the elegance of white to return repeatedly with the intensity of a flower that appears almost hand-drawn.

White flowers with a red centre combine well with glossy greens and a few darker accents in a tropical planting. In a pot beside a seating area or entrance, each open bloom becomes a small focal point. During the cold season, move the display to a bright, frost-free position.

What makes it distinctive

White petals, a red centre and glossy green leaves create a crisp tropical contrast.

White with a red centre

Broad white petals frame a deep red eye, creating a clear tropical contrast.

Glossy green background

Toothed leaves form a dense crown that sets off the large pale blooms.

Successive buds

New flowering tips renew the display while the plant grows in warm, bright conditions.

Why you will love it: Pure white flowers with a red centre create luminous graphic contrast above a dense glossy crown.

Best position

Use as a luminous white focus on a warm sheltered terrace or entrance, alone in a movable pot with room for its dense crown and easy access to bright winter protection.

Colour & compatibility

Compatible planting

Colocasia ‘Black Magic’, Canna ‘Australia’ and Strelitzia reginae place black, deep green and sculptural foliage behind the white flower; separate containers provide precise moisture and easy winter movement.

  • Colocasia ‘Black Magic’ — complements the composition with a different texture and compatible site and soil-moisture needs.
  • Canna ‘Australia’ — complements the composition with a different texture and compatible site and soil-moisture needs.

Care at a glance

Light

Very bright light with gentle morning sun; acclimatise gradually before direct Greek summer sun.

Water

Water when the surface begins to dry, without allowing complete drought or water to stand in the saucer.

Climate & hardiness

Tender: growth slows below 10–12 °C and the plant needs a bright protected winter position.

Safety

An ornamental, not a food plant; do not confuse it with edible Hibiscus sabdariffa.

Light

Very bright light with gentle morning sun; acclimatise gradually before direct Greek summer sun.

Water

Water when the surface begins to dry, without allowing complete drought or water to stand in the saucer.

Soil & drainage

Use a rich but aerated mix with free drainage; roots require oxygen as well as moisture.

Feeding

Feed little and often during active growth, with adequate potassium and trace elements; pause as temperatures fall.

Pruning

Light pinching after a flowering flush encourages side shoots; avoid hard pruning just before winter.

Winter

Move to a frost-free, bright place and reduce watering. Check leaf undersides for spider mites.

Development over timeFrom young plant to mature presenceEstablishment, branching, flowering and the real volume this plant will occupy in a garden.

Initial establishment

After repotting, the tropical crown balances new-root growth with existing buds. Gradual acclimatisation to strong light limits leaf drop and lets branching continue smoothly.

Building the crown

Dense branching adds successive buds and turns the glossy green crown into a stable ground for its white flowers.

Mature expression

At full maturity the crown reaches about 1–1.5 m in height and 0.8–1.2 m in spread. Final planting distance must follow that scale rather than the plant’s current young volume.

History & originCultivar originGraff Breeding · Denmark · HibisQs® series

‘Adonicus White’ belongs to the HibisQs® tropical hibiscus series from Graff Breeding in Denmark. Graff develops the series for abundant flowering and improved branching in plants enjoyed indoors and outside during warm weather. Within the Adonicus group, the white selection is distinguished by its deep red flower centre.

The series’ public introduction does not identify the specific parents or selection year of ‘Adonicus White’. Its history is linked to the Danish HibisQs® programme; a separate crossing history for this cultivar has not been documented.

The central column

The filaments of numerous stamens unite into a tube around the style. Towards its tip the style divides into five stigma-bearing branches, so the projecting column contains different reproductive structures.

One corolla, a striking eye

Five large petals form the corolla, with the red eye at their bases. White and red therefore occupy different areas of the same petals, rather than two separate rings of petals.

Frequently asked questions

Six exact answers about placement, watering, pruning and seasonal behaviour for Adonicus White.

01Can Adonicus White remain outside in winter?

It does not tolerate frost. Move it to a bright, sheltered position in good time and reduce watering as growth slows.

02Where will the white flowers look their best?

Choose a bright position, acclimating the plant gradually to sun and protecting it from extreme midday heat. Dark green foliage naturally sets off the white blooms and red centres.

03Why do buds drop after moving the plant?

Sudden changes in light or temperature, cold draughts and uneven watering can cause bud drop. Keep conditions steady and check soil moisture first.

04Should water remain in the saucer?

No. Water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain away. The soil needs moisture during active growth, but roots should not stand in water.

05When can I reduce the crown?

Prune lightly towards the end of the cool season, as growth is about to resume. Remove weak shoots and avoid repeatedly cutting off flowering tips.

06Is it the same as hardy Hibiscus syriacus?

No. It belongs to the tropical Hibiscus × rosa-sinensis group and needs protection from cold. It does not follow H. syriacus’s normal leafless winter phase.
